Yes.

Also, my wife used to lead support sessions for inmates at San Quentin. Somewhere I've got a ball-cap that says "SQ".

part of our high school curriculum was 2 field trips to this municipal jail at what I now call the armpit of our capital. we were supposed to interact with prisoners to make us realize how lucky we are and maybe to scare us into not living a life of crime after school. if jail in the united states is like the way I see it in tv, its a fucking country club to what I saw- like 30,40 prisoners in a cell, zero activities, the aroma of urine... I distinctly remember seeing a guy all bruised and hurtin' and the other guys told me child rapists gets the regular beatings from fellow prisoners.

Somewhat related:

Can you bail yourself out of jail, provided you have the funds?

Usually, but depends on the jurisdiction, and a surprising number of local Magistrates in PA now accept credit cards. EDIT - Also in PA, in a case of drunk driving or public intoxication it is often required to only release the arrestee into the care and supervision of another person who will be responsible for taking him/her home.

Last week NPR did a series on bail bondsman, and how corrupt the practice is in many cities.

Damn ... you make a good point.

It's Quentin Crisp. If Ian hasn't played him ... he certainly could.

As for Crisp ... I rather admired his highly individual sense of style. I also like Crisp because he was one of Britain's "stately homos" ... and I'm restoring one of Britain's "stately homes." But to be honest ... I selected that photo as an avatar because I'm reminded of my paternal grandmother.

Once bail is set ... it's quite possible.

sort of, 4 times. all a long time ago. all of them really aren't exactly what was meant by the OP

I honestly am not sure about the order

1. did a course in being a pow for a week. being abused and interigated and so on
2. spent 3 weeks in military prison - more or less what happened was one of my collegues did something that pissed off a military policeman, which lead to a foot chase by a few MPs that ended up running into a group of us, who proceeded to beat on the MPs. because MPs are big mean guys, we thought that using a few magazines as clubs would be a good idea. the prison wasn't too bad, just boring. I didn't loose rank, get kicked out of my unit or have to do any labor while in jail.
3. spent a short amount of time, off and on, in prisons where terrorists and suspected terrorists were being kept.
4. once, when I was in civillian clothes and unshaven and carrying my service weapon, I was stopped by some cops and asked for my gun liscense. I didn't have my id with me, which was stupid, so they asked me to come with them to the nearest jail. I didn't give up my weapon, but I went with them until we could straighten it out. so it was pretty funny, me sitting in an unlocked lock up cell, with a riffle and two magazines, in a small police station with a bunch of cops armed with wwii era 38's.

none of the experiences were particularly exciting or bad.
