Is Classical Music Dying?

Classical music is niche these days, as has been the case for a long time. The really sad part is all of the undiscovered talent that we are missing out on because of the lack of popularity.

Join me in supporting government funding of classical music programs AF, funded through a tax on hip-hop recordings and concert tickets. You know you want to!

I'm not a fan of classical recordings in general. I much prefer to see it live. Same with a lot of jazz. There is something about the experience that I find lacking in a recording.

Any new recording/packing of a CD of Mozart's/Beethoven's/Brahms's/&c. music is going to have to compete with however many dozen recording of the same pieces have been released throughout the decades. Basically, recordings of non-contemporary classical have neither the benefit of currency nor uniqueness that pop music recordings have.

I'm sure, comparatively speaking, that classical does very well in back catalog sales.

Listen to it on a $20k+ (small timer I know) system and you will never move from your couch again.

When I bought my CD player, I got to listen to some nice systems. One shop had a tube amp running B&W Nautilus speakers (I think. . . the big shell looking speakers) and a turntable playing some jazz. Still didn't do it for me.

How many downloads on iTunes, Amazon, HDTracks, etc? That's where the juice is nowadays. 20 years ago, a massive classical 'hit' moved 25,000 copies. It's all about the downloads today. We're about 5% of the market. Always have been.

Then, of course, there's this.

Live classical is superb but there are many recordings than can capture much of the magic of a live event.

As long as the symphonies survive, I'm happy.
