events with formal dress code

An interesting girl I know mentioned about going to a nice formal-ish event together so she can play dress-up after her recent shopping spree. I have a new suit I could wear too.

Question is, this isn't the sort of thing I usually do, so I'm a wee bit lost here. Any pointers, please? I'm in Chicago, if that helps.

A suit would be terrific for this event. Wear it and enjoy the occasion.

harvey_birdman, thanks!

While we're at it folks, are there other options?

I've not been a very arty guy -- I prefer music myself -- so this might sound kinda silly but is wearing a suit an appropriate dress code for art gallery openings? I'd imagine some "up and coming" artist galleries might have a more casual dress code.

It'd need to be an established gallery for it to be guaranteed formalwear, I dare say. What about theatre/opera/classical performance? Of course, you could just wear it anywhere, and if questioned, turn to your partner and sneer "the bourgeois really have no sense of occasion these days" and walk off.

I agree with this sentiment, having attended numerous art openings. If it's at the museum and a well-known artist, then you might check with the musuem regarding more formal (black tie) attire, which I have done a number of these as well.

I haven't been to the Lyric Opera House in Chicago yet, but other opera/CSO/musicals (first thing I thought of, actually) that I have been to in the Chicago area is smart casual at best. You might not see a lot of people in jeans and a T-shirt but I have yet to see anybody turn up in evening wear.
