Will be in London in a couple of weeks. A friend with whom I will be wants desperately to go to a pub for dinner one night. Is there anything that is any good? Halp me with suggestions. "Gastropubs" are OK too, I guess.

The Guinea Grill in Berkeley Square is very good. For a pub. Which is to say, nice atmosphere, decent beer and so-so food. Expensive for what it is.

If you want a real "Old London" type gastronomic experience, try Ye Old Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street. Better food, but you still won't lke it. Much, much cheaper.

I went to one that was right on the water and about 500 years old last time I was there. It was great unfortunately I can't remember its name.

Well, you think the French Laundry is lame, so ...

Seriously, who loves the food in a London pub? Guinea Grill is very high class for a pub, but foodwise you can still do better (just not in a pub). Cheshire Cheese is not really a pub, strictly speaking, but the food is better and very "English" (not using that as a synonym for "awful").

Guinea Grill is run by Italians, or at least the Kitchen is, but the menu is not really Italian.

Thats a really wide remit. Pubs are anything from boozers to traditional pub food to gastro to pubs that serve thai food to... list goes on.

It would be a really long list to cover all possibilities.

I don't think it is lame. I just don't think it lives up to the hype. Guinea sounds like it might work. I'm having good food my other two nights, and will be in France killing a pig and making it into charcuterie for the next week, so one so-so place is alright. VKK- I don't need a list, I need a place or two.

The Guinea is pretty good. Get a pie.

Holland & Holland is close if you want a gun.

I guess I don't know what a pub is, so if you say it is, I will agree.

Spring of last year I was in London and I visited with a childhood who lives there now. We stopped in at the Spaniards Inn for some tasty pints. Nice atmosphere, with a bit of history. It's way out in Hampstead, so it might be farther than you'd like to go. Dunno about their food, after some beers we went back to my friend's house where his wife had cooked us dinner.
