Advice requested for a formal event

Hi, everyone. This is my first post, and while my sartorial splendor pales in comparison to many of yours, I'd like to request some advice on formal attire. I'm currently a student at university and have been invited to a "formal" dance that requires khakis paired with a white dress-shirt. (I know many of you take issue with khakis, but I didn't make the rules.) What do you recommend for neckwear? I have blue eyes, so I was thinking that a blue tie would be appropriate. Any suggestions? What do you guys think about something like this (it's fitting for the season, no?): http://www.bluefly.com/pages....9800149 I'm also on a student budget, so I'm afraid that I'll have to compromise style for economy. Perhaps you can recommend some general guidelines (vis-a-vis stripes, etc.) that will lead me towards a timeless--yet fashionable--tie that is fitting for spring weather. Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing that this is some sort of Spring Formal with a garden party or Great Gatsby type of theme. I don't have any rules for stripes, but the tie you are showing would work for an occasion like this. Another option would be checks. I recently picked up a Tommy Hilfiger tie in a light blue, dark blue and white diagonal checked pattern. I found the tie at Ross for $12, so that would be a good place to look if you are on a budget. If I am correct about the theme of the party, you might want to consider a pair of shoes like a pair of dirty bucks or a pair of two-tone brown saddle shoes. If you have a Bass outlet anywhere near you, they almost always have those shoes at a reasonable price. Also - are you wearing a jacket to the party. This would be helpful to know as well. Bradford

Thanks for the advice, Bradford. You're correct in assuming that it's a spring formal. However, I don't know where it will be taking place or if it will have a Great Gasby theme. You're reccomending brown shoes over black shoes? That I can do. And this "formal" doesn't require that I wear a jacket, so I need not worry about that aspect. But thanks again for the help, I'll let you know how it turns out.
