Lands end makes a really good mock turtleneck. I got one with free shipping for $13.

Edit: The material is really soft and it looks pretty durable.

The full t-neck can look good folded over, like this: Mocks are usually crappy.

I prefer full turtlenecks. As you do I like to wear them under flannel shirts. Of course, their color must match to the shirt's and the trousers' color, but in that sense they can look good in any color - well, as a male I would avoid pink or lilac. When wearing the turtleneck under a plaid flannel shirt, I choose one of the colors represented in the plaid pattern. I generally prefer the palest of those colors for the undershirt (often white or écru) because I want the turtleneck to peek conspicuously out of the shirt collar which I sometimes even button all the way up.
