Southern California housing/legal public interest orgs?

Hello all, I'm new around here, but hopefully won't come off as TOO retarded.

Both my wife and I are second-year law students at a midwestern US law school seeking to spend the summer doing full-time, pro-bono legal related work in southern California. We've found a few legal aid societies around Santa Ana and San Diego that are potentially worth inquiring about...however, before I dedicate much more time to the cause, I was wondering if there are any friendly folks that live in the area that could offer some advice. We've vacationed there in the past, but I don't want to end up re-enacting Charles Bronson's Death Wish series via my inadequate planning.

Does anyone have any advice about housing in either areas? We will both (hopefully) be funded by public interest grants through our school, however, economics will have to play a major role in our decision. Living space itself is not that important, I imagine all we will bring will be clothes, and we will plan on hitting up craigslist or ikea for bedding goods. Safety is key to me, but I'm afraid that we would need a 3 month lease, and could spend no more than $1,500/month as we will still be paying on our current lease here at home.

So, long story short, does anyone have any suggestions for towns/communities in Southern California to further research or to avoid like the plague? A forum at city-data.com advised me that living in Santa Ana, CA will necessarily result in being stabbed, shot, and murdered, all in the same day.

Alternatively, if you have any suggestions for housing or public interest law organizations in the area...or even in northern California, I would be very grateful!

Well, we have officially applied to a few organizations, now we keep our fingers crossed!

I would still love some local insight into neighborhoods in and around San Diego. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Do you have a car? If you have to depend on public transit that is probably an important consideration. Your budget should definitely be doable in Santa Ana area. Santa Ana is fine, I mean it's got bad areas but the city is pretty large so it's also got areas that are physically almost indistinguishable from, say Irvine. If you are on the southern side of Santa Ana, close to Costa Mesa, you will be fine. Also Santa Ana is bordered by Tustin, Orange, and Garden Grove on the North side, all of which are mostly fine and would put you probably 5 miles or less from where you're going to be working (if you're working near the civic center area). Orange has Chapman University so it might be easier to get a summer lease there. San Diego is harder to say because it's much larger than Santa Ana. Where would you be working? If it's downtown you might not be able to get under $1500 and live within walking distance, although there are so many foreclosed and preforeclosure condos that maybe the market would be good for someone looking for a short term situation.

I live a couple blocks from Santa Ana and have yet to be shot, stabbed, and murdered. Yerfdog has pretty much explained the area rather well.

Awesome guys, I appreciate the input. I figured it that the nay-sayers at that other forum were full of it, but I love getting some reassurance.

As far as the car, we can take 1 with us or not...I guess it all depends on exactly where we end up and housing nearby. Though I've no qualms with taking the bus to work if need be.

Now if these public interest places will just let me have a chair in a broomcloset as an office and give me something to do, I will be all set.

Bring your car. It is essential in Orange County. The bus transit system sucks and everything is so spread out that you will hate not having a car within a couple days.

yes. the average 15 minute drive is like a 58 minute multiple bus ride.
