Caribbean vacation alone? - Page 3

The Caribbean can be a fine place to unwind alone. You just need to find a setting & accommodations that appeal to you. For example, Ottley's Plantation ( www.ottleys.com ) on St. Barts is a favorite of mine.

As for the cruises mentioned by someone above ... again one must find a line that targets your type. I particularly like Seven Seas and Seaborne. Both offer smaller ships and cater to sophisticated passengers in their 40s to 60s. It's always my goal to ensure that I don't end up around people to whom I can't relate. For exmaple ... there is Holland America ... nice enough ships ... nice enough passengers ... but the age of the average passenger is somewhere beyond death.

if your looking to "get away from it",,, dont go anywhere a tourist info-type thing tells you to go. fcuk that, i hate being harrassed to buy a picture just taken of me or a bracelet i coulda made at summer camp when i was little. or see a grown 20 year old man not able to handle his first beers. one of my best experiences for a get-away vacation was south of tamarindo in costa rica. now that is quite a touristy place, so its there if u want it. but there are some really nice little beaches with a very small town feel with some little condo units for rent, that kinda deal. and the people are nice and iv never felt safer on a vacation.

I usually travel alone anywhere and it is quite fun as you have the freedom to do what you want.. however when you want to go for dinner in the evening then you feel fucked, because no one goes to a restaurant alone. Its just pure ludacris.

^^ But on a cruise or all-inclusive resort you'll normally sit at a communal table and meet new people each meal (just make sure the cruise/resort has open seating). I'd much rather travel by myself than stay home and waste vacation days doing nothing because my friends are too cheap/busy/non-committal to plan anything. Club Med turks & caicos might be a good idea, it's the last adults only club med in the caribbean. Not a singles scene like the adults only club meds used to be, but should be a good mix.

Agree 100%.

I've traveled by myself a lot, including to the Caribbean. I usually go for the diving, and it's pretty easy to meet fellow divers - although I have also met people on the beach, at bars, etc.

It's not all couples either, there are a lot of groups of girlfriends that go to the Caribbean together, at least in the more popular destinations like Aruba and the Bahamas (St. Barts, Turks/Caicos, etc. are more couples-oriented).

I would definitely go for it, although if there's not some activity you're interested in (diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, whatever), you might get bored pretty easily - I can't imagine just sitting on the beach for a week.

Caribbean is a good place to wear no socks, hang out in the shade with a book, and stay away from noise.

There are some nice remote hideaway/bungalow-type places in BVI that I'd think about going to if I had to escape the kids for a long-ish weekend. No idea how the food would be, but that is not the reason for going.

I had a great solo vacation for a few days in Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca. It's a small town with no resorts or anything. Lots of cool and cheap bungalows. It's considered one of the best surfing spots in the world, so it attracts a decent number of foreigners. This is helpful for food, lodging, activities, and meeting people, but it's far from being crowded or busy. It was a good mix of local places that spoke literally no English and places owned by ex-pats where you could meet other travelers. Not too many fancy places, so it was good for a budget traveler.

I don't surf, but it was fun watching. Each day, I would just rent a chair and umbrella, order beers and seafood straight from the water, and sit out in the sun reading. Eat good food at night. Drink tequila at the bar and talk to people, if I felt like it. Very relaxing.

It's far from everything, though. Very remote and a bit of journey to get there. That was part of the fun for me, but it could be annoying for some.

I knew one of the pretentious old cronies would pop up. It really depends on the hostel. I too thumbed my nose at hostels and hostel goers. We started at a 4 star hotel in BsAs but opted for a hostel once we saw everything it offered....newer, just as clean, same size private room for 1/2 price, interesting people from all corners of the earth, and a fully stocked bar/lounge full of attractive girls at all hours. It was my first time (at the ripe old age of 27) staying at a hostel. It was great.

sleep in until noon, drink rum and smoke cigars next to the pool/ocean while reading a book all day, eat some expensive seafood for dinner, then watch boxing until you fall asleep.
You can do that at home.

If he wanted to go for the sole intent of meeting single women, where is the best place for him?
Well you could always go onto google and type in "sex vacation". I think you will be surprised how many small resorts cater to single guys in search of nookie. http://www.taboovillas.com/ http://adultvacationgetaway.com/ etc., etc........

Turks/Caicos were a part of last years IMOFO (International Month of F*&king Off). Spent about 2 weeks in a condo my cousin owns, they were there for about 8 days, the other days I spent drinking tequila, sitting on the beach, laying in the pool, drinking beer, reading, napping, drinking tequila and beer..... You get the idea.

It was great but this next time I think I'll take someone with me.
