Caribbean vacation alone?

Partially due to a recent upheaval in my personal life, I'm seriously considering taking a Caribbean-area vacation by myself in April. Should be some good time away and all that... I'm looking for location recommendations and anyone's experiences in doing this... I've done Mexico and enjoyed that, but wouldn't be opposed to a somewhat different experience.

While I am all for traveling alone, the Caribbean seems like a weird place to do it. Why don't you backpack Europe or South America or something?

I went on my honeymoon in Nassau. We stayed at an all-inclusive. The all-inclusive atmosphere pretty much sucked. I'd agree with previous posters in suggesting that you choose a place (like Europe) that has an abundance of things to do (museums, beaches, historic places, etc.). Sitting on the beach alone doesn't seem like fun.

You've seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall, right? It'll be depressing for a bit and then you'll meet some cute, hot chick working at the front desk who'll follow you back to America and be the love of your life.

+1 Go to Argentina and stay at a hostel to meet people...I suggest the (new) Milhouse. Then go to a Boca game, Iguazu falls, Patagonia, Punta del Este (Uruguay)....

+1

I don't think that very many women go to these places alone, so you have a low chance of hooking up. so you end up in a place that everyone else are couples or families, and you are alone. not all that much fun in my opinion.

I'd hit someplace a little farther out, not an all inclusive. cartegena is great, warm, good food, hot women. that might be an idea. thailand would be my first choice, but that is a lot more.

.....or ASIA.

No offence but don't you think it's a bit pathetic to travel alone if it isn't business. But then again I would understand it if you would like to go away for privacy, a calm and relaxing vacation. And in that case backpacking isn't your number one choice I hope. I recommend you take someone with you. Be spontaneous.

Why is everyone dumping on the Caribbean? You rent yourself a villa, sleep in until noon, drink rum and smoke cigars next to the pool/ocean while reading a book all day, eat some expensive seafood for dinner, then watch boxing until you fall asleep. I spent a week in Puerto Vallarta exactly like that. Most relaxing time of my life.

By comparison, backpacking and museum-going are fatiguing and stressful. And fuck meeting new people, especially college-age hostel dwellers who are insufferably stupid and bore you with their pretentious stories of "really finding myself in Thailand." That goes double for the stroller-pushing tourist families toting fanny packs and birkenstocks.

Yeah, why skip the Caribbean? It can be a relaxing place indeed.

Go to Colombia, Panama. Last I checked tickets are pretty cheap to Cartagena

...and if I see Van Helsing I swear to the Lord I'll slay him!

What's the downside to the all-inclusive package? Thinking about buying a package for my parents. They (nor I) have ever been to the Caribbean.

Do the Dominican Republic or Bangkok(I know it's not the Caribbean) I have been to both places and you will have a great time/warm weather/great food/etc...
