This happened to me too...I think this is the best idea so long as they are appropriate of course.

We had an apartment and other stuff together so it was a real mess when I left her, but I have no real regrets throwing away most everything she gave me. So long as it wasnt useful (ex Xbox, Nintendo DS, shirts).

I had a ex-gf like that, she logged onto my facebook and looked for photos of my ex-gf at the time, would freak out when she found them and deleted them without asking. Also went through my computer and deleted the photos that she found too, I should have kicked her to the curb then and there if I knew any better. Unless I really hate the person, there's no reason to delete their photos as long as there's nothing objectionable in them for your current GF. I deleted that bitches photos the same day I told her I was done.

Put the best one or two in a frame/album and keep them. Send copies to her family. You said you were close friends with her for a long time after you dated, and that was back in school, so if a new girl asks about them, then they are photos of a good friend who passed away a few years back.

I got rid of all mine, mostly because my breakups have been spectacularly painful. I had no desire to be reminded of anything so I purged it all: photos, gifts, items with strong associations.

That's not at all your situation, though. I'm more or less of the opinion that you should give them to her family. While I don't condone raging jealousy, I can understand someone not wanting to see signs that you still think about your ex(es).

I don't even have pictures of my family (parents and brother). Not that I don't love them or care about them, but I've never given a crap about photos of people I know. I guess if you get movie style amnesia someday and forget everyone you know they'll be useful.

I have a few photos of old exes, and I found that recalling those shortcomings helped me to be a bit better the next time I was in the saddle. Even now I take lessons from my earlier foolishness - and it keeps me from treading the same ground.

The only problem comes when you think...we could have done well together. Ehm - not so much; there was a reason you two broke up.

Throw in a box and put in the closet. In 40 years, you can go through your box of odds and ends and reminisce.
