It's pretty scratch resistant, but a drop that hits the 'sweet spot' will shatter that thing into a million pieces.

I've dropped my iPhone plenty of times with no harm done, although I don't doubt the screen could crack if it hit at some unlucky angle or "sweet spot." But really, what device is this not true of? Are you saying the screen should be literally indestructible? If you're gonna drop ****, it's eventually going to break. Just seems like common sense to me. Anyway, the question was about scratches, and I was just saying that that's not really an issue.

You used the term 'practically indestructible' which isn't true. If you're referring to scratches only, then I'd say yes.

Fair enough, although that's a bit pedantic. I meant "practically" as in "in practical use," which to me doesn't include dropping the device. If you have a habit of doing that, though, then yes, maybe you should worry about the screen.

Dropped my iPhone 5 times on cement. *knock on wood*

The glass is pretty resilient, but I always keep my phone in its own pocket without keys.

Is the iPad any less drop resistant than a regular laptop?

I don't expect to see a lot of people walking along using these.

A friend of mine dropped his iphone, and despite a soft landing, it shattered.

Since Jobs has been back, he's really only blown it with the Cube. I think you'll be surprised at how well this thing sells.

I'm an avowed Mac junkie. I've been around since Lisa. I have been doing straight shots of the Apple kool aid since Day One. I don't, however, see myself with one of these. There are plenty of other people who'll see it differently than I do.

i'm a mac junkie too. and i fully expect this to sell well. a pretty screen is more than enough to make people drop wads of cash i'm just saying that the spot this thing occupies in the product lineup is entirely superfluous, and this marks the first time apple is selling something on their brand power rather than on the product's own merit

Just because it holds no value for you doesn't mean it's useless to everyone. For example, I've been using a MacBook as my only computer for the last four years. I'm due for an upgrade and have decided I need a desktop for the processing power and screen real estate (to run Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, etc). At the same time, I also want a computer I can carry around with me everywhere, to do basic things like web surf, check email, etc. Prior to this, I was planning on getting an iMac + MacBook Air. Instead, I'll be getting an iPad in place of the Air. It's 90% of what I need in a portable secondary computer (and will probably reach near 100% with the proliferation of third-party apps). What you see as a limitation may be a benefit to someone else. For example, I'm glad this thing doesn't run OS X. The last thing I want is to have to maintain two computers with two installations of OS X, and attempt to keep all my data and files in sync between them. I love that I can just plug this thing in like a giant iPod and have everything taken care of for me. So please, think a little before you make sweeping generalizations about the utility of any device, because maybe, just maybe, someone out there has different needs and wants than yourself.

everything you said can be done with an iphone (smaller screen notwithstanding), but aight, have fun using a "computer" that can't run more than one app at a time

I already have an iPhone. The screen size is a limitation, and is not comfortable for extended web surfing and such. I have not found the lack of true "multi-tasking" to be a limitation at all for me, however. I can listen to my music in the iPod app while surfing the web or doing any other task on the iPhone. All the third-party apps I use take advantage of save states and/or push notifications, so the effect is that of multi-tasking (e.g. if I receive an IM while in another app, I get a push notification, switch seamlessly to AIM, and then back to the original app, which is just as I left it).
