For vintage, if you like rummaging, Jet Rag and Wasteland are good for I also like Lo-Fi.
If you don't want to rummage, American Rag of La Brea is terrific, but you pay higher (though not crazy) prices for the privilege. It also has terrific denim. Haven't been there for a while, but they had anything from 5EP to Levis to Corpus. If you can't find what you want there, you'll find jeans there, you'll find them in Hollywood Trading Company in Fred Segal, or Scout on 3rd. Kitson and Lisa Kline Men on North Robertson have some decent mainstream brands. In the Beverly Center, Politix and Traffic have loads of denim, some of it really out there. If you want Yamamoto and other designer jeans, go to Maxfield Bleu on N. Robertson or Maxfield on Melrose, depending on how rich/poor you are feeling.
A great place for vintage jeans at designer prices is the Denim Doctor's, on 3rd. Great, expensive vintage belts too!
