Lighter gray or black socks to match a charcoal suit?

Ideally, I'd like gray socks that are darker than my charcoal suit.

Unfortunately, I've searched several malls and have been unable to find what I want. A lighter gray or black seem to be the next best choice, but both look a little off to me.

What do you think?

Either will work just fine depends on the shoes your wearing with the suit, you want the socks to complement your shoes just as well as the suit.

And what, aside from black shoes, would you recommend to wear with a charcoal suit?

With a charcoal suit you can wear any colour socks you please. Dumb question.

Go with black, I wore medium-grey socks with charcoal trousers and black shoes the other day and was frightened to sit down because it looked so stupid.

Purple works well with charcoal trousers and black shoes.

For suits I prefer my socks to be the same color or darker than my pants, not lighter. I get outrageous with my socks for casual wear.

Someone posted a quote earlier on this topic. It went something like "A man of business will match his socks to his trousers. A man of leisure will match his socks to his mood." I think that's apropos.

Lands' End has these socks in "dark charcoal" and "deep burgundy", which both look pretty sharp with charcoal. The black are OK too, but the other two are better.

If you are wearing black shoes, the black socks may draw people's eyes down towards your ankles and their unbroken line of color. It's not a very flattering look in my experience. If you wear medium-gray socks you might not win the approval of this forum, but few people in real life will notice anything amiss.

I think I own only one pair of black socks. If I want something boring, solid charcoal is usually as dark as I go.

I PM'ed Jamison a few weeks ago about getting more of these and then stupidly never followed up with him. Good for him. I will definitely buy a few more pairs.

Excellent. I look forward to dressing the morning and realizing that a pair of my HY Marcolani's will accompany my outfit well.

Yeah, I've done this before. Not a good choice.
