Caribbean vacation destinations?

Thread Starter
Suggestions? Will be with a group of 5 or 6, likely for a week this summer. Probably looking for some sort of an all inclusive deal. Wouldn't be my first choice, but I am likely to be outvoted. Laying on the beach for a week straight is not my idea of fun, so looking for something that offers a good variety of other activities as well (nightlife, fishing, snorkeling, etc. Casino would be nice).

Found some good advice here: http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=64704

Any other thoughts?

+1 Barbados was just spectacular, not cheesy in any way. Really authentic.

It's not technically in the Caribbean, but I think Aruba is probably your best bet. It has pretty much everything - great beaches, nightlife, shopping, good restaurants, activities (diving/snorkeling, windsurfing, paragliding, etc.), and plenty of casinos. It's also pretty compact and easy to get around - everything you want to do is in the Palm Beach area or downtown Orajenstad, and it's very easy to travel between them. There are some tourist traps, but that's to be expected in the Caribbean. A lot of tourists never visit the interior of the island, but it's really interesting - a very dry, desert-like environment unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. There's some great hiking opportunities too.

The Bahamas - Atlantis is spectacular, but the rest of Nassau/New Paradise Island is kind of a dump (I have not been to Grand Bahama and the other islands).

Barbados is beautiful, but does not have the nightlife of Aruba, nor does it have casinos.

Martinique. It is like going to the south of France. Can't be beat.

I've heard great things about Martinique and the Caymans. Many Europeans choose to vacation in Key West, which is also very nice, but no casinos or amazing nightlife.

Best bang for the buck is to take a cruise. All caribbean destinations are more similar than different, but pricing and airfare will vary widely depending on where you go. I like Club Med, but the only adults only resort left is turks & caicos.

I love cruises. It is like my own personal germ factory that floats. Oh those public swimming pools full of obese americans, m-m-m-m...

Make sure you stay on the low rise part of the island. The high rise area is an overcrowded nightmare.

barbados! I stayed here at the Blue horizon. The place it self wasn't so nice. Not bad...just islandlike (only the resort hotel chains are going to feel like an american hotel). The beach was right across the street and that particularl beach (rockley I think) was my favorite...good waves for body surfing and not super crowded. Don't forget to go to the mount gay distillery and stock up (tour/tasting is free if you have a red hat from a regatta...) Had lots of great fish in restaurants and from stands...much better and cheaper than Puerto Rico. Nightlife seemed alright... Went on a catamaran ride which took us snorkling and swimming with the turtles. We found this great guy with a boat that turned out much more entertaining than the catamaran tour that our travel company offered. We saw them on this huge boat, all crowded together and such...we had this smaller catamaran for the same price (including hotel pickup)...all you can drink booze...the captain cooked for us...got a lot more personal interaction and info about the island.

havent been to aruba, i can say skip on bahamas though. Puerto rico was really cool, good nightlife in old san juan and the casinos feed you these little crappy sandwiches that taste half good after a bunch of alcohol

I spent my honeymoon in the Cayman Islands and while it was gorgeous my wallet got assfucked, and after 8 days we were bored as everything stopped at 9pm.
