Computers: All In One or Regular Desktop

No Poal.

Obviously one difference is in how a person uses their computer but what might some other considerations be?

I have an all in one (iMac) and I'm pretty comfortable with it. I've had it for almost 8 years and have finally outgrown it, or should I say that current technology has outgrown my computer. I've upgraded it as far as it's going to go.

I'll be getting another computer soon (probably another iMac) but was wondering what other advantages there might be for a regular desktop?

1. It's cheaper than a comparable laptop. 2. It'll likely have a longer life. 3. You can use it as a media/gaming station. 4. You can attach a huge ass monitor to it. 5. It's more comfortable for extended sessions. 6. It's a good backup computer when your iMac chokes. 7. You can upgrade it. 8. Pron looks better from a desktop. 9. You can leave it on 24x7, in case you need to bittorrent a 20 gig pron site rip. 10. You can definitely store more pron on a desktop.

he is talking imac vs desktop...no laptops

I would say if you want to stick with apple, there is no advantage. You will pay a lot more for a tower and separate parts. It will be more powerful...but the imacs are already pretty powerful. You can get a mini..but by the time you buy a decent screen equivalent to what is on the bigger imacs, it starts to get more expensive and less powerful.

Those new imacs have nice screens and people I know with them are happy. Just say away from that damn mini keyboard without the numpad.

Thanks for your post. However, personally I'm probably going to get another iMac but my main question doesn't need to revolve around them. Just comparing desktops to all in one's really. I know that other manufacturers make both as well.

If I was not going apple, I would almost universially stay the f away from all in one units (unless I wanted low powered cheap netbook style "appliance" units). The imac is awesome but all of the PC all in one units I have seen suck. They cut corners to meet a PC price point and do not have the longevity of the imac. You can build a PC in a tower or even a smaller form factor for very little money that will out preform the all in one units (you can't do this with a mac...hence why the imac is such a good choice). Even when not building it yourself, you can probably get far more value out of it...the only issue is that someone like dell builds cheap junk with cheap parts. Having a desktop lets you swap out parts for upgrades or repair much more easily.
