Hi all:

It is sweltering in the tropics, and I need to beef up my ss shirt collection. This is a question of function over form, but if I can fit some form in there too, all the better.

Specifically, I like short-tail shirts that can be worn untucked. Goes with khakis, jeans, whatever. This is the most comfortable way for me to deal with tropical heat. I was looking for some recomendations. Brioni has some lovely ss sport shirts, but they retail for nearly $300 at Maus & Hoffman, and I think that is a bit high. Anyone have some good ideas for stuff I could find on Ebay for less than $100?

Oh, I have a shirt in Liberty of London fabric from M&H, and I do like it quite a bit, but it retails for $135 (I got it for Father's Day last year so I didn't pay for it). That is a bit high, and it also has too long of a tail for my taste to wear untucked. I'm going to look at BR this weekend, because they tend to have nice slim-fitted ss shirts.

Did you ever try Jantzen?

I think western-style shirts are the only acceptable short-sleeve ones, though they may not be your style exactly.

Try a guayabera. They come in slim cuts. I like linen. I can recommend Ramón Puig in Miami but you would need to go there in person. But, there are several on-line sources, here's one.

I find the four-pocket style extremely ugly, though they seem to be quite popular in Latin America. What do you think Stu, as you are in Puerto Rico?

I agree with you ss western shirts are totally cool, and I would like some, but I need variety. I also live in a Caribbean Latin culture, and western shirts all the time would make me look like rodeo boy.

Again, function over form. Function? Guayaberas are popular for a reason. They are great for sweltering heat. Remember, you guys have nasty summer heat too, but most houses have central AC and so forth. Here we don't have central AC owing to the construction of hte homes and energy prices here don't lend themselves to an efficienct use of central AC.

Form? Guayaberas are generally for older men. In many Latin countries you look stupid if you wear one and you are under age 55 or so. People will snicker behind your back.

One of my favorite Florida/Caribbean outfits consists of a linen guayabera(Ramón Puig bespoke), Panama hat, linen draw string trousers and espadrilles. I couldn't care less about arbitrary demographics or the petty reactions of strangers. If something doesn't speak to you, so be it, but don't let the narrow-mindedness of others dictate your choices.

Valentino has a "younger" take on the guayabera in their Spring/Summer line. http://www.valentino.com/index_s.html

I'm a big fan of the Aloha shirt. If you like them, I can recommend some sites.

Please do. They are nice to have on hand in the heat. It is basically wicked hot from May 1 to Thanksgiving. Then for winter it cools down to a low of 68 in the dead of night, and about 76 in the heat of the day. But the rest of the year it is 90s and winter blanket humidity.

For more mall-ish brands, DKNY Jeans and Guess both make lightweight short sleeve shirts in pretty slim cuts (darts in the back, etc).
