Show us some of yours, then! And er, make sure they don't apparently look like socks or legwarmers.

It does look it, doesn't it? Sadly, nothing stronger than San Pellegrino and pomegranate juice was in my system when I snapped those photos.

Fortunately, in their defense (if not mine) both ties are far better looking than my rank attempts at photography would suggest. That's what you get when you take an ancient Nikon 2 megapixel camera, stand two feet away, and zoom in.

In fairness to both ties, they're not as ugly as my pictures would suggest. The Brioni tie, with a silkscreen overlaying a delicate woven pattern, looks especially worse in the picture than in real life. And much less black.

Also, I can't explain it at all, but women go crazy for that ectoplasm green and searing magenta tie. Absolutely bonkers. Maybe it's because that white guys who are relatively unafraid of color are rare. Or maybe Charvet packs pheremones in their silks. I don't know. But women lose all rationality around that tie.

Nice tip, SG. I'm going to keep an eye out for some fonky green ties. Actually I saw some at Burlington Coat Factory yesterday but passed them up...maybe I should go back...or raid my dad's tie rack that hasn't been updated since the 70s.

What makes them horrible:
from left to right

Tie number one: 100% polyester. The gold is shiny, the brown is not. Inside the paisleys (not sure if you can see it at this resolution or not) are little designs that looks like penises and balls shooting golden orbs of sperm. Truely classy.

Tie number two: 100% French Acetate. there are about nine different colors on this tie. Most of it is mustard colored, there is also some navy, lavender, teal, white, green, and brown. They are all shiny. The surface is irregular and gives the impression that it is woven of recycled Christmas tinsel.

Tie number three: 100% silk. Made in the USA. Brown, Cream, and teal. The main picture is several women using the telephone, whilst coyly looking about for eavesdroppers, but embossed into the texture of the fabric itself is a pattern of horrible blotches, some of which resemble ducks. The combination of the two is truely nauseating in person.

My top three of the moment, but I'm always looking for more.

In terms of colors, number two might look very nice on someone without much yellow in his personal coloring. Only the lavender and mustard are very noticeable (that is, in the picture). The better of the two, the lavender, gets most of the attention. The other colors are compatible and help soften the look.

In terms of fabric and the related sheen and texture, it's a different story.

There's nothing wrong with the second tie. Many men would be satisfied with it.
