You're going to have to pay taxes and duties no matter what service you use (though Canada Post is pretty random). The problem is the brokerage fee, of which UPS charges a shitload.

I think you are worrying way too much. Not trying to be an ass or anything, but I think that there is nothing at all to worry about. When you buy jeans from a B&M, it is not like they only have one disly pair that get tried on and such. there is no "house" pair.

Well in my experience, especially in england, shops that carry higher end fashion ONLY EVER have one pair of each size of denim, one size of each coat/sweater etc. They literally buy in one piece in each size and hang it out on display. Whatever you buy will have been tried on and handled by many people, and there is no way around that. Its not like h and m where they buy in a truckload of crap, these boutiques can only afford to buy in one piece of each and that is how they operate.

In my experience getiing international (non-us) items in Canada,

EMS/Airmail = ~20% of declared value + gst/hst/pst
UPS/Fedex/DHL = ~20-30% of declared value + ~$40-50 brokerage fee + gst/hst/pst

So your best bet is to ask for ems or airmail with a low declared value, under $40 will pass free of charge and anything above will be charged accordingly.

UPS shipped to Canada is not worth it unless the item you're getting is at rock bottom prices and extremely expensive to start with. I ordered a Sterlingwear jacket, and it would have been FAR cheaper to PROXY it than to pay UPS prices. I had to pay $60 for a ~$150 item in brokerage fees, and there is nothing you can do to dispute it. Unless you're saving $400-500 in the first place, you're gonna get fucked, hard. Expect $40-60 increase in price, and then add original shipping and duties. I paid close to $250 for a $150 coat. I would never use UPS again on principle because they're horrible.

cant you guys ask them to mark the value down, or are the customs laws different over there? When i buy from the states or canada, they usually mark as gift with a cheap value, and it gets through customs and VAT.

Agreed, inbound to Canada will cost mucho dinero with UPS/Fedex/DHL as they all use their own customs brokerage so EVERY item will get stopped, checked and charged, unless its a gift declared under $40, so avoid it like the plague.

Easiest/cheapest options for inbound to Canada are usps, ems or regular airmail, ymmv.

Most person to person shiping is done this way, however some stores arent that willing to do it and insist on declaring full value.

Oi Polloi won't do that. I asked them once (I live in Norway, outside the EU and always insanely high taxes and duties), they said "no, it's against the law".

HI

I've shopped with Oi Polloi online for the last 2 years and all I can say is that they are truly faultless. I've bought stuff from them on many occasions, tried the item on and then returned it, they usually refund my money within 24h of receiveing the item back. Every time I've bought jeans from them they've had more than one pair per size. There are loads of very good online stores like this around now but they are still in my top 3 and I do most of my shopping online.

In order to not get charged duties and taxes the item has to be either (1) Purchased item of $20 and under or (2) A gift worth $60 and under. It's such a crapshoot though, I've known people who have had their undervalued packages opened by customs and the price reevaluated and taxed. Doesn't happen often though.

^ in order to not get charged, yes! In order to not get stopped and checked by UPS/Fedex/DHL customs it has to be (1) gift + (2) under $40 declared value, everything else will get stopped+checked and sometimes even opened to verify, so avoid like the plague. That's just in my experience though but I've had craploads of shit delivered from everywhere and through a smorgasbord of carriers, still ymmv.

I'm not sure where you shop here in the U.K or what label's you buy but to say that you can only get one of each size is a touch exaggerated, especially denim.

And for Oi Polloi just to add comment really as one of the best in the U.K, they won't send you anything that is not up to scratch.
