"The world's most expensive ham" has gone on sale in London, according to retailer Selfridges.
The leg of Iberico ham, which costs £1,800, went on sale at the food hall in the retailer's flagship store in Oxford Street, central London.
The 7kg (15lb) ham leg comes with its own DNA certificate as proof of authenticity.
Pig farmer and ham expert Manuel Maldonado selected 50 pigs that were reared in Extremadura in western Spain.
The pigs were fed on a diet of acorns and roots to give the ham a distinctive flavour.

Twice in recent weeks I have had Iberico ham in restaurants in NY, and it didn't cost anywhere near this much. It had the same name, the same acorn diet, etc. I wonder if I was just being misled. Anyway, it tasted very good.

£260/kg is just slightly more expensive than good jamón.

IIRC, jamon iberico has become somewhat of a generic category, encompassing a spectrum of variable quality similar to prosciutto. I believe that pata negra is still top of the heap for Spanish cured hams. That stuff in the UK is outrageous...

To my knowledge that isn't far off from what a leg of great belota would cost.

Dear Rich people,

There are some of us in the middle class who oppose taxing you to death on principle. We are fans of the free market system, dislike government intervention in the economy, or just feel that what you do with your money is your own business. But purchasing £1,800 Ham legs makes it difficult for us to stand by you when Obama calls for tax increases on the rich. Please keep shit like this under wraps so as not to continue to upset the working poor who will surely come at you like Haitian looters if they knew you were dropping 3K USD on a pig's appendage.

Hugs and Kisses,

Harvey
