please advise office wear appropriate for winter (in london) ?

Thread Starter
hello everyone, i'm going to work in london for about 1 month and I will be going end-January and staying throughout february.

I have been told that the weather in london will still be unusually cold for this time of year, and I have been told to purchase appropriate winter wear which will be reimbursed by the company.

I will be bringing along some regular business suits, and aside from a cashmere sweater, scarves, gloves and thermal underwear, I also bought a shiny down jacket from esprit (which I thought would not be appropriate for wearing to the office), which looks something like the following link :

as I am from an asian country and have never been to europe, I was wondering if you guys could advise what is appropriate office wear for london during winter time ? specifically, what kind of jacket/coat/outerwear should I buy ?

a small favour to ask, please supplement your replies with some pictures of the clothing items you describe ... I fear that by just words and description I may not know what you are referring to, thanks!

You need a wool overcoat:

Buy this and have it delivered to your hotel in advance.

1. Coat - in black, dark grey or navy
2. Umbrella

Office-wear:
Dark trousers
Plain and striped shirts (avoid dark shirts, if you can)
Dark shoes

A good woolen winter coat is advisable. Personally, I often do without the coat, but then I'm used to Russian winters... You can always get an umbrella from your hotel when needed. I'd imagine it would be a pain to take back a full sized one with you.

Fail.

Not "dark shoes," black shoes. It is true that some business/areas of London don't insist on black shoes anymore, but as a foreign visitor, stick to the rules. The fact that you obviously know the rules will impress everyone a great deal more than any avant-garde fashion statement you might make involving brown shoes.

But Ich (may I call you Ich?) is on the right track here. My only quibble is that if you are going to get a covert coat, you might as well get it in fawn, velvet collar optional.

The jacket that you (the OP) posted is utterly awful, unless you are going for the chav look. Well, even then it is utterly awful. Don't bring it.

To give you some ideas, have a look at TM Lewin. They have an extensive on-line store. Their stuff isn't great, but you can get a look at what middle managers in London are likely to be wearing. They do (or did) have some standard things, like covert coats, at reasonable prices. Their shirts are OK too, for the price. I use them a lot for travel.

If you have time, I suggest you bring a minimal amount of clothing and then do a bit of shopping while you are there. You can find lots of suggestions on the forum. You would really be doing yourself a disservice not to come back with a new covert coat, some Harvey & Hudson shirts, some Drakes ties, etc. You might even find some good sales on Jermyn Street.
