NYC to London

So, just accepted an offer to move to London for a year or two before possibly going back to NYC or Asia. Now people please tell me what should I expect (been there couple times on business trip, but I was slaving in Canary Wharf, so don't have much idea about actually living in London).

Everyone who went to London tells me food sucks there, and base on my experience in Canary Wharf I have to agree... I am sure the high end stuff are good in London, but day to day food seem to suck pretty bad. Also would like to know how much I should make to expect the same living standard as I do in NYC, i.e. do I need to make the same salary as I do in NYC but just in pounds but not in dollar?

p.s. we can skip the girls part, I checked it out already. English girl has great accent, but 95% looks horrible, though I would assume London is metropolitian enough for me to move beyond English girls I suppose.

Good food can be found, especially if you're fond of Indian cuisine Hot chix can be found, especially if you like Russian girls Some great clothing stores Plus they've got Internet over there. What else do you need?

We haz the eurostar and cheap flights to the contininent if boredom ensues. Russian and eastern european girls and beyond galore.

Live in the east where all the kewl kids are especially if you will be working in the city or canary wharfster. Considerably cheaper to flatshare but look for studios if you prefer living on your own; some sweet pads near Canary wharf and that part of town in general. Invest in an oyster card or scooter and you are set.

Pizza, burgers, and possibly chinese are worse in London than New York, otherwise if you look around you should be able to find stuff that is as good, you should pick up a restaurant guide. I would say living costs are a little higher, I have never bought/rented a place in the states so I can't comment on that, but prices of general things you buy are higher. For goods from America, for example, the price in pounds is often the price in dollars, plus a bit, which considering the exchange rate is the wrong way round. Groceries and other basic food shopping is cheaper here than in NY. Girls in London are better looking than in much of the rest of the UK where yes, I will admit, a fair number of my country women are pig-dogs. The UK/US and thus London/NY are more different than a lot of Americans assume but you will only notice a lot of the differences after you have been here for a while, when they will probably start to annoy you. At least that was the experience of the many American students I know, it may be that going from from business in one large international city to another the differences are not as apparent. edit - oh and Mexican food, just don't bother with Mexican food in Britain.

I've never been to the states but my idea of the US is of people having a 'glass half full' mentality to life and always willing to strike up conversation and generally being enthusiastic about life. London doesn't have that unfortunately. Oh and bring a few layers

London is fucking fantastic. Great food, great everything. Love that city.

London can have great food, problem is you have to seek it out (and sometimes pay dearly for it).

Costs are totally dependant on your lifestyle. I know people paying anywhere from 100 to 2000 a week.

If you have specific questions feel free to ask.

Agreed. Love the city and i didnt have a bad meal. The only thing i can think of which might be be sub par would be lunch type of food where you wouldnt be eating at a sit down restaurant.

As for the people, for the most part, i thought everyone was very friendly in general, particularly out in pubs but then again, we aren't the friendliest people here so my view might be scewed.

I have only stayed in Chelsea/Kensington and everything always seems better when on vacation/short visits.

^vacationing, true dat! imo, to actually relish the lifestyle [while living there], you gotta be earning quite a bit more than what you're getting here in US. but, given a chance to experience for a couple of years, i'll probably take it even if it meant cutting back on lifestyle and living at sub-par [to what you're used to]. the lure of a brand spankin' new set of adventures, as well as cultural immersion are just irressistable and priceless.

What's rent like in Manhatten? I'd probably say you are looking at ~1600+ Pounds per month for a decent / nice 1 bedroom in a desirable neighborhood in London...

Pint in a pub is about 3-3.50 so maybe $5.

Thanks for all the response so far.

1. yes, when I was mentioning food I meant to say quick lunch food, not the nicer ones.
2. I will probably have to take a hit on rent, but still trying to get international assignment instead of relocation, so might get taken care of on the housing front.
3. I do expect siginificant salary raise just from convert to USD stand point of view, though stilll negotiating I suppose.
4. Girls, definitely thinking of Russian and Eastern European variety here

I will be working in Canary Wharf, any idea what are some of the area I should be thinking of live in (<35 min commute, and NOT in Canary Wharf). I was thinking of London Bridge, looks like a nice mid way between central and Canary Wharf, yes, no, maybe?

One of my best friends is an American living in England. This American friend of mine hates everything about England and London in particular. She hates that everything is so squeezed, the narrow roads, people's accents and she thinks all are a bunch of drunks, she hates the tube and that the burgers are not the size of a pizza or that you can not get 15 different types of... ice. She hates the shopping centres and she hates the weather. She even complains about American food chains in England not offering the same dinner sizes as they do in the US. She mostly eats at MacD's and Burger King and she thinks "gourmet" is a conspiracy to sell bad food at really high prices. She always makes a pointless comparison with the American way (most recent example: "the London Aquarium is not bad but it ain't Sea World") and she complains about house prices. I can tell you that, as far as I'm concerned, England has some of the best restaurants in the world, some of the best shops in the world, the people are nice and when a woman is beautiful she is stunningly so. As opposed to some other countries, one also don't run the risk of getting shot while filling the car at a petrol station (although one could very well get stubbed). My friend genuinely thinks that the country of authentic reproductions is the best country in the world but she is a gorgeous louder than hell overweight bundle of love. Wouldn't change her for the world. Clee1982, you will hate it here.
