In fact, you are indeed the reason I chose that tie, but there is no inconsistency.

Earlier I suggested wearing patterned silk ties with a suit, as opposed to a sportcoat. Hence, the pic.

I have nothing against patterned neckties per se, but they enter the realm of cheap gaudiness when they are shiny silk. A thick muted silk or a printed wool can look smashing. One has to be careful when wearing them with a sportcoat, especially when the sportcoat itself is busy, but it can be done.

One last thing when it comes to printed ties: there are classic patterns, such as foulards, paisleys, medallions, etc. Then the 90s came and MC Escher barfed geometric slop everywhere. They are harder to find, but Will has several classic selections on his website.

Nothing to criticize here. You look amazing!

It is hard to tell from your stance, but I would have to say that your sleeves could use a slight shortening, and your pants might be a tad long.

too much plaid?

the formalist.

If you are saying that my tie yesterday was a piece of cheap gaudiness, you are not far off the mark - the tie in question is rather the junkyard dog of my collection, but, in certain cases and with certain color combinations, the tie does its job, within its limits.

Thanks for your explanation, in any case.

I wouldn't have worn that tie with that suit. Yes too much plaid. It seems as thought your suit was a size too big when you bought it judging by the shoulders. If you get them chopped about 1/2" it would look great.

Thanks all. TB - See above re: 90s geometric patterns.

Tie is nice. I like the contrast with the suit. Classic color palette.

The suit devours the shirt-tie combination but is a great piece in itself. Some contrast in pattern or preferably color would improve this fit.

thanks for the comments from yesterday. for those who asked the tie is from Faconnable and the wingtips are pebble grain Barkers.

Thanks for the advice. You may be right. Do you think it also shows the same problem here? (which I think might be a better idea of how it actually fits...)

With strong shoulder jackets it will always be hard to tell with your arm held like that. Take some straight forward and side pics in a relaxed position.
