Fruit flies and Manhattans

So, I am in a bar in an airport in Florida and I order a Manhattan up. I get about 2/3 of the way through before I discover two fruit flies (dead and presumably feeling no pain while drowning). The waiter is appropriately apologetic. He and the bartender investigate and discover that the fruit flies had invaded the vermouth, where many more were bobbing around dead. I was comped with free Wild Turkey rye neat (two glasses).

I did a bit of research and discovered that fruit flies in vermouth is a far more common problem than I would have thought. Who knew.

You all may want to inspect the vermouth before ordering the next Manhattan. Probably not an issue if you use only dry vermouth.

eeeuuuuwwwww I would have guessed they came from the cherry. I had dinner with a guy from MI once who used to work on a cherry farm. We were in a big group at Bob Chinn's and sharing pitchers of Mai Tais garnished with lots of maraschino cherries. He proceeded to explain that it was very likely that each of those cherries had been up a raccoon's ass. Apparently they brine in large outdoor vats... over the winter, which don't freeze because of the salt and sugar in the water, which invites vermin of various types to burrow in them. Fortunately, I'm not squeamish.

That's gross. Obviously someone isn't doing their job because if the bar is properly kept fruit flies shouldnt even exist, but what can you expect from an airport bar? Sweet liquers should have screens on the speed pour spouts so nothing can enter the bottle.
