+1. I really like MMA, and I still train. My background was in striking (Karate, Kung Fu, kickboxing), but really, the striking in MMA is pretty low level compared to what those guys can do on the ground. I understand why two really good wrestlers would prefer to keep it on their feet, or two really good BJJ guys, for that matter, but I really prefer to see A level ground work rather than C level kickboxing.
And then there are times when it's incomprehensible why some guys insist on using their rudimentary kickboxing when they are so skilled elsewhere. I have no idea why Jorge Gurgel, for example, insists on keeping things on his feet (and often losing) when he is a world class BJJ practitioner. Same goes with Dustin Hazelet in his last fight. I mean, seriously, if you were to tell me (and I'm really not good) "Hey, go kickbox Dustin Hazelet" I'd probably do it. If then you said "How about going to the mat with Dustin Hazelet, I'd be like "Well, time to get submitted in humiliating ways over and over again."And yet, he insisted on standing up with a monster of a man in Paul Daley. Makes no sense.
