How much crappier than NY is San Francisco?

Might have a job offer in SF...what are the pros/cons vs. NYC? I only have a handful of acquaintances/friends living there, but aside from that what I wonder what the transition is like. For one, will I need a car? I know there is way more nice outdoorsy stuff to do around there from the 3 days I spent there. Other pros include cheaper rent than Manhattan (I hope) and better weather. Cons are no good sports teams and people might be strange there.

If nothing else, future issues of The Homosexualist magazine will be easier to fill with primary-source content.

What am I missing, y'alls?

You'll want a car. Just watching the people who take transit in SF freaks me out.

Major plus: I'm only an hour away.

they don't love ny'ers and I don;t love them. my fake aunt and uncle left here for there because he got a huge offer but they were back here in 14 months.

This Moving to SF thread from the CEsspool is actually pretty good and might cover some of your concerns. I will warn you though, there are a lot of Californians there This is something to consider. Apparently the weather isn't really that much better around the Bay, it's just foggy and cool most of the time. With a few weeks of extremes in the winter and summer. Consensus from that other thread seems that you need a car (or at least a motorcycle ).

You have the SF SF meetups.

NYC is way better than SF. People say it's like a small New York when SF is really more like a bigger Omaha but with bridges and better food.

SF is great; people are quite nice and great scenery. Also, they don't get hit as hard during economic downturns.

What? I can't help it that meeting me is a major attraction for SFers that can't be found anywhere else.

As an option you can commute and live in the land of sunshine and swimming pools just a 35 minute ride away on BART. Housing costs less, very little crime, hot looking women. Then if you want the edgy, alternative hipster life, you are just minutes (by car) from Oakland/Berkeley.

Sf is foggy but it does have it's beautiful days. And, all you need to do is drive North, East or South and within 30 minutes you are in sunshine almost year-round.

You can be in the wine country in under an hour, Lake Tahoe in 4, Carmel, Big Sur in 2. Lots of places to hike and numerous parks and recreation areas.

As far as actually living in SF, like NY, apartments tend to be small, parking is very limited, but you will need a car. I have lots of friends who love living in SF who moved there from London, Boston, Chicago, Santa Fe and they will never move away.
