thanks bjorn. i know these aren't that casual, but hey, i'm just not a casual dresser. they offer the same model with a latex sole, but it looks like something a mountain climber would wear. these appear to have rubber bottoms, so i think they'll fill the void between my campers and my dress shoes.

in case anyone is interested: i tried ordering a pair of paraboots yesterday, and the owner of the store refused. apparently, the girl who i'd spoken to on the phone was misinformed, and the store has actually stopped selling this brand. the owner said that paraboot takes up to 8 weeks to deliver (i had been told 2), and tends to deliver the wrong model and/or color. doing business with them is such a headache that she has given up carrying their shoes. i'm left with having to take a trip to wilkes-bashford in san francisco, but i'll probably just look around more first. also, the prices are actually a bit higher than what i had posted. the average is about $300.

i found what i was looking for today on melrose. the brand is "biarritz", and they look like this, only in black: i highly recommend the store, which is called "allen k". i was attended to by the owner, allen, and he is very passionate about handmade shoes. he makes his own line of women's shoes by hand, and sells only handmade men's shoes. i had not heard of any of the brands he carries, including biarritz, trapper, and others. i cannot attest to the degree that the shoes are handmade, as i know very little on the subject. however, the quality of the leather was definitely superior to most of what's out there. thank you to everyone who offered advice. i'll check out the paraboots next time i'm in san francisco.
