MBA in Boston

I'm putting this thread here because of the "social life" element to the question

What are your recommendations to an out of towner for MBAs in Boston? I guess Harvard is usually the obvious choice from a recognition point of view. What others are worth investigating as all-round attractive packages i.e. worthwhile course, social life, quality of living etc?

I need to have a reasonable shortlist before I visit the city, and you can't get the inside info from rankings etc

This. Don't bother with anything else. Are you looking at any other schools outside of Boston?

there are 3 ish tiers of MBA's in Boston 1. HBS/Sloan 2. Babson/BU/BC (depending on what you want there is an order here) 3. Northeastern and everyone else tier one needs no explanation. tier two certainly aren't as prestigious but if you intend to work in Boston after school they are ok. plenty of people coming from top undergrad schools and from good work experience come here, they just aren't as super elite as HBS/Sloan. if you want finance, BC is pretty good actually...Babson has a great entrepreneurial program and BU is more tech driven. if you want one of these things and (probably) to stay in the northeast they can be good choices the others really should only be considered if you are going part time and are already in huge debt or something

If you go full-time outside of the super elite, make sure to get a scholarship. Otherwise, sadly, I don't think it is worth it

Even with a scholarship it might not be worth it. But who knows.

This is what I struggle with. I sit with no debt, a blah banking job and the decision to get a good (but not the best) MBA. At the moment MBA is not in the sights because I'd prefer to stick with the no debt 'plus' rather than the not.

I'm not sure how you'd do better than a "blah" banking job with an MBA from a "blah" school.

b/c I know people who got good jobs in asset management (w/ no prior finance experience) from a "blah" school?

As has been said, it depends on where you plan to work.

A good resume and an MBA from a second tier school like Babson or Boston University will get you a few more looks from employers in the Boston area - but I agree a company in NYC or Chicago wouldn't think as much of it.

I have an MBA from BU and it has opened a few more doors, but I can say I am not yet making a substantial amount more than I did before I spent $40,000 on the degree. I did learn a lot in business school, but most of it is common sense and things that a sharp person would pick up in the business world on their own.
