Certainly over 51. Probably 150. About 50 are in active rotation in any given season. Probably 50 are too wide or otherwise out of style.

i only have about 20. i want more, given that i wear a tie every day, but i'm incredibly indecisive when shopping for them. so i just ask for ties as xmas and bday gifts.

I'd guess between 40 and 50. More than I need given my current lifestyle, but I somehow seem to collect them if I see them at a good price with the idea that someday I'll need that EXACT tie so my stash keeps increasing.

When in college (25 yrs ago) the father of a friend was a haberdasher. His suggestion to us was that we should budget for one new tie each month. He would probably have meant to add "...until you have enough". But I've mostly continued the practice ever since.
Quick math says I should have 300 by now. I don't. Not yet.
