a friend of mine is coming home from canada in a couple of weeks. i wanted him to bring home some special stuff. did some searching, only came across "Crown Royal" Whiskey and a seemingly awful single malt. cant remember the name though.

So could you guys help me out and tell me, what is the most special / best / rarest / whatever spirit, preferably only available in canada? he lives in the toronto area, if this will help digging up some of the real special cool liqours.

thanks

Canadian Whiskey The best two I've had are: Crown Royal Cask No. 16 (much better than XR) Crown Royal XR These are common, but the best examples of Canadian whiskey that I have had. Two rare ones that I want to try are: Canadian Club 30 yo Glen Breton Ice 17 Cask Strength (Very rare, aged in ice wine barrels, the regular one, not the 17, is available here: http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-7176.aspx I would love to try this, but its pretty expensive. Note the 25cl bottle. If you want the rarest, this is probably it.)

Quebec makes some good icewine.

The best Canadian wines I've had were from British Columbia. Unfortunately, that was many years ago. It is a bit expensive if you want good stuff, too...

Canadian Club. I was recently recommended the CC Sherry Cask.

Also, Ice Wine anyone? I am no expert, but I understand that Canada makes some good ones.

This and this. The Niagra Region, which your friend lives by, makes some of the world's great ice wines. However, and I cannot caution you enough, do not let him buy any Pinot, Cab, Merlot, Baco Noir, etc. for you there!

Pretty difficult, Crown is a rye whiskey (though I'm not sure its actually brewed with much rye anymore). Much different flavouring than most Scottish drams and more likely to be used in a mixed bevy. Unless of course, you manage to track down one of the rarer versions as suggested above.

Even though us Canadians refer to our native whisky as "rye," it's mainly made with corn and is much smoother and mild than a real rye whisky. It is not like Scotch in the least.

Crown Cask 16 is good, CC Sherry Cask Aged is good, but I'd still make a bottle of Wiser's Best as a gift.

its also a reasonable value, and pretty "unique".

Not really...if anything its most similar to a very smooth bourbon or, if you wanted to really stretch, an Irish. It doesn't have the maltiness of scotch, plus its aged in cognac casks which further smooth it out and give it a fruity dimension.

Wiser's for sure, for rye in some kind of reserve...crown and CC are for college kids. Mission Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 is a great wine and I have been able to get it from the LCBO here. Some people love Ice Wines but I can't stand them...very sweet.
