Tie showing through suit

Hey all,

As I gain suit-wearing experience, I have noticed that while walking, the bottom of my tie often shows since I leave the bottom jacket button undone. Is this OK? It just doesn't seem right with that happening. I do wear my tie a little long, right past my belt buckle, but I am a short person. If I make my tie any shorter than it is, and I mean any shorter, the knot ends up being way too big to even tighten. I suppose I could tuck my tie into my pants to stop it from showing, but that seems a little drastic and stupid. Thanks for any advice.

It will also show if your jacket has fairly open quarters. I think it looks fine, even dashing.

I agree. Everyone knows you're wearing a tie anyways, so it in no way looks sloppy. Unless of course you have your tie 5" down past your belt like this guy.

do you wear your pants at the waist?

Tie to the belt buckle. No shorter, no longer.

Thanks royal, easier said than done. Making the tie any shorter than I already do means that the knot is going to be huge and ugly. I already tie it at the point where the narrow end starts to widen. Either it is going to be too long like in that picture, or too short and fat, and I'll look like a circus clown. I'm picking the lesser of two evils here.

There's no worst evil IMO than a tie that reaches your groin area. A slightly bigger knot is much preferable.

You should buy shorter ties

Indeed. There's nothing wrong with a decent sized knot. It's when it's huge as worn by English football players circa 2000 that it looks ridiculous.

Ok thanks for the help yall. I'll try a bigger knot tomorrow and see what happens.

I don't really like it showing. Doesn't happen much with higher waisted trousers.

Better to have hanging a bit below the belt than tie it too short and have it hanging ABOVE the belt-honestly, nothing looks dumber. I have this idiot 6'4" kid living in my building who works in a top financial firm. He buys standard length ties and then ties Full Windsors-his ties are always at least three inches above his belt. I told him about this as nicely as possible, even pointed out the fact in Dress for Success and online to him but the stubborn Jackass just says "I like a big knot." So there he is going around the NYC Financial district wearing at least $1000 of Brooks Bros. every day looking like Gomer Pyle. Sad.

I don't really like the look of the tie peeking through. It doesn't matter when walking, but if it happens when standing still, it might be because the suit is a bit tight. Most of my suits have open quarters, but the tie is only visible through the bottom of my most slim-fitting one.

What is your height? I'm 5'7" and I can wear standard-length ties at the proper length. On me, with a Prince Albert knot (FIH wrapped around twice), the narrow end usually ends up 1" above the wide end. IMO, either too long or too short looks terrible. Just adjust the knot to get the proper length.

The exception, of course, is a three-piece suit...you don't want tie showing under your waistcoat...

Is this a hard and fast rule? I find that I like the widest point of the tie roughly at the top of the waistband.
