What is his screen name?

I would pay good money for a Briggs sword umbrella. It's a shame they don't make them anymore.

"It was so interesting," Mr. Sanjideh said of the cane, which his wife bought for him at a flea market. "I didn't know it had a sword in it."

Indeed it is very "interesting" that your cane had a massive sword in it, Sanjideh! TSA agents questioned him and let him go (sans sword cane) after being convinced he was just some old dude who didn't know his cane had a sword in it"”not a devious, geriatric dandy-terrorist. So, that's funny, some old guy had a sword cane. Ha ha, what a weird one-time incident... Digg it or post it on your Facebook wall or something. But wait!

Since 2002, TSA screeners have found more than 200 canes concealing either swords or knives. Many of these incidents involve elderly travelers who are just as surprised as the security screeners to find sabers hidden inside canes they may have inherited, found at antique shops, or received from charities. In September alone, four such incidents occurred according to documents provided by the TSA.

200 sword canes in less than ten years! Remember: It only takes one granny accidentally slipping on a plane with a sword cane and then a terrorist who is also on the plane realizes that the cane has a sword in it and uses the sword to hijack the plane. JUST ONE.

I hope they are on the lookout for sword umbrellas as well

I'd like one. Sounds like a nice thing to have.

I think I'm going to use this when/if we get scanners.

"Sir, our scanner has revealed something rather large in your pants, and we're concerned it could convert into something hard and dangerous."

"Oh, that. Don't worry about that. It's just my sword cane."

Yes, that was the other possibility that occurred to me. Perhaps he paid RJ a finder's fee.

Imagine the sartorial splendour if people were allowed to wear swords. They'd be the best accessories imaginable... stylish, a plethora of personal choice regarding hilt decoration, and of course to a degree practical. The best we have today are canes (I have no need of one, and of course the pimp associations for the younger users) and umbrellas (amazing, yet limited occasions for wear).

OTH, if allowed, the rate of stabbing and self-inflicted-nerd-deaths would rise dramatically.

They are cumbersome to wear around, make sitting and moving around a crowded area more difficult, and their practicality is serverly limited. Really just should have started a dumb threads post for this.

A few years ago someone on AKAC PMed me to inform me he had purchased a Swaine Adeney sword umbrella at the going out of business sale of their San Fran store about 20 years ago... He told me the retail was about $1500 and offered to sell it to me. As the handle was cherry and it would have probably been a federal crime (use of teh intertubes/mails) I didn't reply back... Unfortunately he no longer appears to be a member there.

They still sell sword umbrellas in France made by Fayet, but they are expensive (around 300 euros), the blades are dull, and the quality of the umbrella isn't impressive.

Sigh.
