Togo Team Bus Attacked/World Cup Security?

Anyone else feel that the WC should not take place in a region where "armed rebels" can attack a team bus? I know S Africa and Angola (where the attack took place) are entirely different places, but jesus christ, African security is a known concern, and now this.

Angola and South Africa are different countries. What does an attack taking place in Angola have to do with a competition in South Africa? Did you have a problem with the olympics in China which has a rebelling (Tibet) province?

+1. Stupid is. Stupid.

I think what he's saying is that the World Cup shouldn't be on a scary continent full of black people.

Hey guys, I'm going to London for the 2012 Olympics and may take in a show or two while there. Should I be concerned with the safety of the theatres after what happened in Moscow?

You guys are asses...South Africa is bordered by some shady nations, and security has been a concern from the get go of the bid. CAF's reaction to the incident is ridiculous, and they will be hosting (Yes CAF, as well as South Africa) some pretty juicy targets. If rebels saw fit to attack the Togo national team, imagine what these militias and extremists are thinking about the possibility of the US, England, France, Italy and any other first world nation.

Also, S Africa is only 15 years removed from apartheid. You think the poor blacks who live in the shanty towns of Johannesberg won't be licking their chops knowing that the worlds most popular targets...er, sorry, I mean athletes...will be in their neck of the woods?

China is bordered by North Korea (Psycho regime with faulty Nukes), Kashmir (Guess), India (separatist rebellion), Russia (crazy russians, separatist fundamentalist muslims). NYRanger, where were you questioning the safety of the olympics?

You think Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Namibian guerillas are going to plant IEDs and mass rape rich white women during the olympics?

Globe, Yeah I do agree the crime rate in South Africa (Jo'burg no doubt not sure about Cape Town and Durban) is atrocious.

I wouldn't cancel or move it, I just think that it is going to be a huge challange. and there will be a handful of murders and rapes of drunk tourists. it'll be a learning process for the rio olympic games. I am much more worried about crime and riots that terror, although who knows.

I guess we'll all have to wait with bated (baited?) breath to see how disastrous an African run World Cup will no doubt turn out.

I think it's going to be a blast. so many africans take the game so seriously, they are going to love this.

I love the comparison of Africa's porous borders, where violence has a history of spreading from country to country, where the rule of law is rather absent and where rebel militias have more power than many of the governments, to worrying about North Korea when you are in China or Moscow when you are in London.
