Don't get that cable. It will give a stereo analog signal--you will lose any surround encoding. You want an HDMI connection first, and if that doesn't work, an *optical (SPDIF)* or *digital coaxial* connection (like GQG mentioned).

HDMI connections are generally simple for video but not always for audio. The problem is two things: 1), getting audio out of your laptop's HDMI connection depends on the manufacturer of your video card being competent in connecting the audio and 2) some receivers have trouble handshaking your HDMI connection like they should.

If you can't get the HDMI to work, it shouldn't be much problem to map a setting to have HDMI video and digital audio. While using an SPDIF connection will prevent you from receiving HD audio, it won't be a big difference for anything you're playing on your laptop (unless you want to use it as a bluray player).

Thanks for that -- may avoid some unecessary running around on my part. I will have my younger brother try to help me with the settings on the laptop and see if I cannot get both video and sound out through the hdmi first before going to a digital output (or other) for audio.

eg1, The first thing that you need to do is determine whether the HDMI port on your laptop computer is designed to transmit sound. Not all laptops with HDMI ports are able to transmit sound using them. The second thing you need to ask yourself is whether you really want the sound to come out of your TV, or whether you want it to come out of stereo speakers. Almost no HDTV comes with a powerful, decent-sounding speaker built into it. If you can transmit sound through your HDMI port, then your manufacturer's Web site (link) or tech support forums should explain how to change the default sound output to your HDMI port. For starters, try right-clicking on the Speaker icon in your Start Menu Bar. Choose Playback Devices, and look to see whether HDMI is available as a playback option. If it is, then you're in luck and you are all set. If you don't see it, post a list of what you see on that screen anyway. If it turns out that you cannot use HDMI to transmit sound from your laptop to your TV, there's an easy and cheap solution. I'll post that later, based on your answer to the question about your laptop's HDMI port carrying sound or not. Plus, again, you need to make sure that you want sound to come out of your TV and not out of your stereo.

Pretty sure your HP supports audio over HDMI, at least other HP laptops I've tried in the past do. Just have to check under the audio options in the control panel.

Yeah, that was my impression after reading some information about his computer. Hopefully we'll find out whether it works soon!

Thanks, guys. I can find the hdmi device in my "sounds" thing on Vista, and I can get it to show a green checkmark, which means it is supposedly selected and presumably working -- I can even run the "test" on it, and the pinging sound does come out of the stereo speakers (when I hook the hdmi to the front port of my avr) like it should -- but no other sounds from the laptop come out of those speakers.

OK -- finally got it to work. I think it was making sure that I had switched to the "digital output" before connecting the hdmi cable. Before I was using the internal speakers and then tried to switch after the connection had been made.

Many thanks to all who helped out -- I can now watch Georgia Tech lose to F$U over and over and over again ...
