Looks like tix are starting to go on sale... opening and grand tasting dinners so far. I believe this is the 3rd year; I used to go to the Masters of Food & Wine events which were great, but this new version is even more insane glancing at the chef listing.

i don't know how anything could be more insane than the old Masters. Jeez, I remember one meal prepared by Michel Richard, Jean-Louis Palladin and Alain Ducasse with DRC red burgs. that was one terrific party and one of the few of those kinds of events that was more than a mass-feed clusterf*ck.

True, what I did enjoy about the Masters dinners was how small those sitdown Grand Finale dinner were.

yup. highlands inn really knew how to put on an event. i remember another weekend where the plan was calif v. france. first night we had chalone and domaine dujac, second night caymus and lynch-bages. it was also great because they treated the chefs and winemakers really well, so they actually dug into their cellars and brought some really respectable wines, not just the new releases. of course, back then there wasn't nearly as much competition as there is now.

Yeah, I think the shift came a few years ago, and the new Pebble Beach events are more about gathering as many top names together, which means going for volume in terms of ticket sales to pay for it all. Also, there are definitely more people into food these days, so I can see the rationale of dinners being a bit less intimate being along those lines.
