Almost without exception home-made espresso on traditional/commercial-type machines are inferior to cafe/bar-made espresso.
The Nespresso/Tassimo pod things are pretty bad in my experience.

I find the grinder is the most important part of french press coffee making. The fineness is so important do avoid to much silt/sludge, yet still maximize flavour.
