Voted Alsatian. Mostly b/c that's what I've been more exposed to.

Can be delicious. Icewine is the shit. Don't know much about it, but have been bowled over every time I had it.

German labels are hideously and pointlessly complicated. Varietal + rating + provenance, in clear typescript please, and nothing else.

German but the great thing about Riesling is that even the bad stuff is good enough to drink. BTW, for not including NY.

When done well and bone-dry, I think the finest white that is out there to pair with food.

I'll +1 Manton's sentiment on teh german labelling practice (kabinett, spatlese, wtf).

a lot of the villages on is the region have wine festivals. I had a couple of years when I hit a lot of these festivals. you get to try a lot of different types of resling, and generally enjoy the Germans gift for getting drunk and having fun.

I don't buy a lot of white wine, but there is room for a nice reisling every now and again. not that familiar with the Alsation

as to icewine - tried something reacently in Canada, indian summer wine. not icewine, but about halfway there. not my favorite stuff, but it actually works as a dessert wine.

Huge +1. I've looked, but it's all too confusing for my tiny brain.

actually, its just the different levels of dryness that you should care about, all the other stuff is basically hooey.

Why are all the producers Dr.'s

for those in the city, these guys sell their wares at the Rock Center Farmers market in the summer. Good stuff.

I have a slight preference for the Germans. Blue Nun doesn't count in my assessment.

And the labels are confusing, but they do serve a good purpose. Big difference between an Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslese (sp?), at least this is listed right on the label for your reference.

i like the fruit and flowers aspect of german. alsatian is more steely (incidentally, don't EVER say that in front of them a wine producer from Alsace, because they will immediately scold you that an Alsatian is a dog not a wine). a well made riesling, one with plenty of acidity, is one of the best food wines around.
