Shoe Addiction on a Budget

After spending several years on style forum, I've caught the virus of collecting shoes. Unlike most, I've gone after quantity over top end quality, but figure this collection should last me for many many years. And as a student, my budget hasn't been that high, and this entire 35 shoe collection was put together for about $2700. So no EG, JL, G&G etc., just some good everyday workhorse shoes. I've probably got too many black shoes, and have some repeats particularly in the horsebit loafers. I probably could use some more shoes in a merlot/cordovan color and perhaps some more boots.

Anyway, here they are:

Brown Shoes:

Top Row (L to R): Ferragamo Loris, A. Testoni Captoe Bal, Allen Edmonds Park Ave., Brunomagli Marsico, Fratelli Rosetti, Ferragamo pebble grains

Bottom Row (L to R): Taryn Rose (good for walking the hospital), C&J/Peal, Romano Martegani, A. Testoni tassel loafers, A. Testoni pebble grain horsebit loafers, Polo/Alden penny loafers

Brown/Black Shoes:

Top Row (L to R): AE, Alfred Sargent/TRL monks, vintage Ferragamo pebble grain wingtip monks, Peal/Alfred Sargent wingtip double monks, Taryn Rose Mocs, Polo/Alden chocolate suede loafers

Bottom Row (L to R): Ferragamo monks, Peal/Alfred Sargent wingtip double monks, Ferragamo horsebit loafer 1, Ferragamo horsebit loafer 2, Ferragamo horsebit loafer 3, AE venetian loafer

Final Pic:

Top Row: Polo made in Italy plaintoe, AE Dryden, AE Park Avenue, Brunomagli Marsico, Ferragamo Lavarazione Originale, Peal/C&J Pebble grains/dainite

Bottom Row: Loake jodphur, Hogan jodphur, Taryn Rose chukkas, Sciapo merlot wingtip, Taryn Rose patent formal captoes

$77/pair on average, THAT is efficient... too many black shoes though.

Yes Yes Yes.

No offence to big timers, but it's unlikely that i'll ever be able to justify spending over $300 on a pair of shoes (but i do love having a perv at the shoe Appreciation collection). This collection is what i aspire to.

wow...I can assume these were all purchased as 2nd or used?

I've been growing my collection on a budget as well, with only my RM Williams puchased at retail. though, those are very hard to find at anything but new/at retail.

I bought Grenson desert boots from Gilt for $120 ish all in, and Grenson chukkas (seconds) for $115 ish all in...and will probably buy an AE from ebay for $100 ish soon, but your average is is still way below mine. amazing

to me, it's really the total cost of your shoe collection (and I guess, $'s spent / year of actual wear) that needs to be justified and is more relevant than cost spent per shoe. if today you buy 10 pairs for $100 each (say slightly used or seconds made of calf skins), and the entire collection lasts 10 years, and I buy 2 new pairs today (say new shell) for $500 each, and each of these lasts 10 years, then effectively we've spent the same even though our cost per shoe is way different anyways, you've obv done well

It's probably about a 50/50 mix of new/used. I've done pretty well at the Saks day after christmas sale the last 3 years, getting all of the Testonis for about $90 each. The most expensive pair in the collection is the first pair of Ferragamos that I bought new at the saks after christmas morning sale for $130. Most of the Peals were picked up off B+S for about $80 each. The Taryn Rose shoes and polo shoes came from Grapevinehill when on sale and with a coupon, so they were about $50-75 each. The Martegani loafers were from Rider's ebay store for about $40, and the Loake boots were from Charles Tyrwhitt for $70 several years ago before they significantly raised prices. The brunomaglis were from amazon for $75 each.

Most of the AEs and the rest of the Ferragamos were bought of B+S and ebay for about $30-60 on average, generally only worn a handful of times or new old stock for both pebble grain ferragamos.

All are still in excellent condition, just the black Park Avenues are getting ready to be sent in for new soles shortly.

those are great. you didn't just get quantity, you got excellent quality for the money. yes, there are no EG's, but you got 35 high bang-for-buck shoes for less than Mr. Portnoy spends in a phone call
