Preliminary Threak FAQ
Q: Metro, why are you starting a threak about astrology? I thought you were intelligent.
A: I'm glad you asked. I don't really understand or believe there is any scientific basis for any of this stuff at all. I understand that cold reading uses age-old tricks to make you feel that the reader has deep insights about your specific personality, when really you are only grasping at the vague points that nearly everyone has a way to interpret as personally accurate.
However, after a friend recently sent me a few sites with very detailed horoscopes (both Western and Chinese), I have to say that the accuracy is frighteningly spot on.
Q: You do realize that the horoscopes are vague enough so that everyone sees something true no matter their sign?
A: I tested this hypothesis (for myself), and realized that most of the horoscopes that were not mine were absolute opposites of my personality. In my specific case, both the Chinese and Western zodiacs were very similar and accurate regarding my personality. It may be coincidence, but I'm not going to make any assumptions in either direction. Just stating the hard facts.
Q: Ok feggit, why don't you go pick up Cosmo and read your love horoscope. It probably has you being kanchoed by a butch Thai ladyboy. I hate you.
A: From what I've read from daily/seasonal/love horoscopes, the majority is bullshit. The difference is that these attempt to be predictive of future events as opposed to descriptive of a general personality. They usually always fail, so I have pretty much discredited them completely.
Q: How does this relate to StyleForum?
A: It may explain why certain posters like each other and others hate each other. Also, it got me thinking about the "Would you cheat on your wife" threak. I think the propensity to cheat depends a lot on one's personality type. When I said that I would consider not getting married because I would not want to be tempted to cheat, I got some shit for it. This was before I read a certain part of my detailed Western horoscope. Here is what it said about that part of my personality:
"While he is passionate, he likes carnal desires and voluptuousness above all. He goes to excess, is unfaithful and often unsatisfied. Serious family quarrels in view."
"Weaknesses: instability in loving relationships, unfaithfulness, gives too much weight to the views of others and to public opinion."
"Likes adventure, travel, gambling, takes risks for the pleasure of it, treating it as a game. Lots of love affairs."
"A slightly hasty marriage. The relationship between man-and-wife will be very friendly and full of understanding. Both will love their independence, their freedom of action. If one refuses to give this to the other while insisting on it for herself, then a divorce will ensue."
Great. Just great.
Q: So what is the point of this stupid thread, except for you to waste my time and go on and on with this stupid FAQ?
A: Spend a few minutes reading your own horoscopes. I found the two best sites for Western and Chinese Zodiacs. Then post and let us know how accurate you find it to be.
Western Zodiac (this is excellent and detailed): http://astro.cafeastrology.com/cgi-bin/astro/natal
Be sure to enter your time of birth as well.
Chinese Zodiac: http://www.chinesezodiachoroscope.com/index.php
Type in your birthday. Then, click "Find my Sign." ONLY THEN, click on your animal on the right for a detailed horoscope.
Enjoy.
