Web Design Careers

Anyone have any experience in the field? I'm thinking about doing freelance web design to support myself, while I focus on my true goals (film and writing). I'm planning on focusing on the design side rather than the development side. Any advice?

partner with a good developer, understand that what works for a medical site won;t work for a record co. and vice versa, understand functional design is more than half the battle.

yep, I'm experienced in the field.

Good luck with your idea, because there is a lot of competition out there. Many people in overseas "outsourcing" locations are offering insanely low prices for services. My advice to you would be to not look for business online places like craigslist or elance - focus on working regionally and locally. Market yourself on public bulletin boards and network constantly - make the fact that you are local and can meet with them in person to discuss & present projects your USP.

To be honest, you probably will not make even close to enough to support yourself, so you may just want to think of going into something else that is easier.

Generic freelance web design is an incredibly competitive field.

You should consider focusing on a specific industry, so you can build an expertise on the design needs of a particular type of client (ie, lawyers need a differently designed website than fashion models or toy retailers).

Any ideas? I'm looking for something that doesn't require a 4 year degree.
