Do I need to tip if service is included?

I just made a reservation at a Michelin-starred restaurant where service is included in the price. Do I still need to tip? If so, how much? It just feels weird not to leave any tip and I don't want dirty looks from the servers.

Knowing where the restaurant is located would help.

I understand asking IF you need to tip...bu how much? Use standard tipping rules if you do.

I would say NO.

What's the point of including a service charge if I'm still "required" to tip?

Dirty looks don't hurt nobody. Are you that susceptible to dirty looks that you must pay to get rid of the feeling?

if it is indeed Per Se, I always thought 20% gratuity was included in the menu price.

Here in China, there are some restaurants which try to add a "service" fee. When the service is atrocious, we just take some things from the restaurant equivalent to the amount they charged.

Do they still have genuine ivory chopsticks?

Can your "proxy" me a pair?

Then it depends on the % that's already included and how you feel after the meal about what % you would have tipped. As a matter of principle, unless I've had bad service, I always leave a small tip even if service is included.

As strange as it sounds, I would also add that I'm more likely to be pleased with service when it is included than when it's not. Knowing that waiters are attentive even when they know their tip is mandatory makes me incrementally happier about their service.

Depends on how much the service charge is and how good the service is.

If it is 15% and the service is good....I usually tip a bit on top of the built in charge.

If it is 18% to 20%, the service better be exceptional if they expect to get a tip on top of what is already built in.

I don't feel obligated to do so if service is included, but usually will leave one if service has exceeded expectations.

No, unless mindblowingly incredible.

If it's Per Se, you don't need to add any additional gratuity. However, if you feel like you were given exceptional service, you can add an additional tip. Last time I went, the service was spectacular, and there's a line on the bill where you can add additional tip if you wish.
