the worse i seen a customer is when they are up front ordering their order after that we bring it out to you and we give you a plastic number you put on your table. sometimes people can be not polite. like when they dont have enough money or its maybe $5.14 and they only got$5.00 or something and excpect me to make up the difference. if i did that for everybody, i'd be broke in no time!!! lol....

At most restaurants I have a hard time bringing myself to tip 15%, I usually stay within 10-15%. It has to be some pretty damned good service for me to cough up an extra 10-20 bucks for them to walk some plates out, tell me to enjoy my meal, never to be seen again. For some exceptional service I will reward them though.

My grandma owns a restaurant in a not so nice part of town. One time this lady and her mom bring in their little kids and spilled juice and milk all over three tables and the floor, and did not leave a tip. She is lucky to even get a tip in that neighborhood. You get the best service from ma and pa places but people at Applebees make 15% for not doing anything.

I think I've only not left a tip once or twice and it was because I had to wait and only saw the waiter one time I think. I ended up leaving a $0.01 tip just to make sure they didn't think I just wasn't the kind of person to not tip.

The thing that drives me most nuts about restarants though:

1. Bringing kids under age 10 to a restaurant. Once these people let their 5 kids run around the restaurant!!!
2. Wearing a t-shirt, hat, shorts or sandals to a restaurant.

15% i thought the new unspoken standard was 20%... i tip anywhere from 10% to 25% depending on the service and the waiters ability to answer my questions; knowledge of the menu (specials). and i'm a sexist, if my waiter is very attractive or flirty, i'll tip more towards the 25%. 10% applies to dumbasses who don't know what is on the menu and serve you bullshit. I hate it when you ask for a check but the waiter insists on ignoring your request and gives you a desert menu instead. he gets 10% and if i'm really pissed 8% (i never go back) back on topic. i hate it when people don't have the courtesy to step out for a minute when receiving a mobile call. they need to be stabbed in the neck with a bic.

I eat out a lot - I probably eat no more than five meals a week at home. I usually dine alone, either working or reading while I eat.
One of the most depressing things to me is four people sitting at a table, all talking on their cell phones to other people. I feel that talking on a cell phone in any reasonably nice restaurant is just tacky.

For a change - things waiters do that irritate me -

Blame any delays/errors on the kitchen
Reek of cigarette smoke
Tell me all about themselves
Hit on customers' dates
When serving a large party, act like they can remember the entire order and not write any of it down. Then repeatedly come back to ask for clarification.
Kneel when taking my order
Leave the bill when delivering dinner.

I have never been to the fabled utopia of Europe - where all native customers are incredibly polite and the service impeccable. These are just my observations of American and Canadian restaurants.

A $0.01 tip would be deemed an insult by most.

I believe waitors and waitresses are now called "servers". To me, in a place like a diner, she is still a waitress. It would have to be a damn fine restaurant for me to ever call someone a server. I have to truly feel like I am being served first, not just someone waiting for me to order.

If I go to a restaurant and get great service and have a good time... I tip in excess of 20%

If I go to a restaurant and I plan on coming back often... (Wok n' Roll for the DC peeps) I tip in excess of 25% so I get my way the next time I come.

If I'll never go back there... about 15%.

If they the experience sucks... you're lucky to see 5%. My girlfriend always makes me tip even if it sucks, but if she wasn't around there would be some servers getting pennies.

Also, what's wrong with going to a restaurant in shorts/flip-flops/hat/t-shirt? If it's summer and not a fine dinning establishment, I don't see a problem here? 8/10 times I go out it's to drink and just nosh on all their appetizers (I like variety). Plus, if it's summer and a weekend, pish-au.

I totally agree about the rug-rats though. If you're dumb enough to have kids, go to kid friendly restaurants at kid friendly times. Otherwise, get a sitter. It's good for the economy. Otherwise, I will teach your children bad words!

Cheap wine is just kool-aid? At most restaurants I go to, the cheapest they have is about $45, and that's equivalent to a $15 bottle, or so. There are some good values at that price. We're not talking about Mad Dog 20/20 here. Depending on my mood and where I am, I will order better wine, especially if the lower-priced selection sucks... but again, I don't see an issue here. Now, pretending to be a connoisseur of cheap wine, that's just douche-y.

Sorry, but if this happens, it means the server was inattentive.

Diners have a right to take action if the server doesn't do his/her job.

And I'm talking as a former server.
