I am having a hard time with colors. I like to wear button ups with a v-neck sweater and im having a hard time with what color button ups to wear underneath. Whats best? I also have a few questions below.

If I wear a black shirt with dark blue jeans, is brown shoes or boots ok? Same with belt?? Or should they be black or white?

I think a good conservative wardrobe has a color palate based around navy and grey with tan, olive green, and basic blacks and whites added in.

blue jeans and brown shoes will always work with almost whatever else. navy and brown i think goes together all the time.

of course you can always branch out, but i think the above is a pretty safe bet if you're not sure.

If the sweater is something like black or grey then a solid color shirt, or a patterned one, can be a nice touch. Try purple (generally pretty flattering) or maybe red (slightly riskier). Conversely, if your sweater is something more bold a white shirt is usually good.

I think it's silly, but GQ would have you try looking like these fellows:

There's a lot more leniency with colors here than in somewhere like MC. People will abide by rules but there exist exceptions to them, you'll need to figure out when you can wear brown shoes with something black, or what sorts of black shoes are appropriate in general.

One thing I can say is if you're like anyone here and wear lots of raw denim, you might want to avoid navy colored outwear unless you can make it work.

GQ would have you do a lot of things which might shame your family and yourself too in a couple months.

Is it bad that I don't think the combo on the left is horrible? Although I would tuck in the shirt. Pink and red is atrocious though.

Can someone give me a definate guide? Like...I am heading to J.Crew in the morning and I have no idea what to look for specifically for this specific look.

What color shirts and V Necks should I look for?
And is this look good with jeans?

You can just wear white shirts underneath darker colours if you want to make it really easy... Burgundy, purple, jungle green, royal blue, garbage can gray, cholera brown.

shirts in really light solid colors (white, cream, light light navy, light light pink, etc.)

sweaters as mentioned above. navy, grey, olive green, tan, personally like maroon.

once you get a sense of color, get a sense of pattern. read a bunch of men's clothing blogs. they like to dwell on patterns once they moved on from colors.
