Valentines Day and the Viet/Chinese New Year (Feb. 14) 2010

Valentines Day and the Viet/Chinese New Year (Feb. 14)

In recent memory I cannot remember when these 2 celebrations fell on the same day. My wife and I are not sure how to handle this. First, there is Valentines Day. We would love to go out to dinner but the 14th is a Sunday. I imagine that our local favorite will open for the day. If her two sisters and their husbands go out to dinner, this will interfere with a proper Tet celebration. Second, since Valentines Day is Tet, none of us want to leave the kids at home. Third, it would be nice to eat at an Asian restaurant but Asians always bitch about other Asians cooking. I have found that this is the case across all Asian cultures. It seems that the best scenario is to cook at home. There will be 18 people including children. My wife made Pho for Christmas. The whole process took 15 hours and was a pita. My wife might make it again but it is doubtful.

What do you think is appropriate for 18 (7 children and 11 adults)? I was thinking of ordering some rib-eye from Lobels. Just not sure what to cook that will serve 2 different celebrations. Can anybody make some suggestions?

Logistically the cooking should not be a problem. We have 2 stoves and an awesome grill.

Tet is more important, celebrate that. Valentine was invented to sell chocolate and roses.

I suppose the perfect Valentine's Day present for a Chinese girlfriend would be to agree to meet the parents through dinner on Chinese New Year.
