Why not?

I really wish we'd go back to not so long ago when only close friends were referred to by their first name.

I wish we'd go back to a time when people were called by their Christian names. Damn political correctness.

Obviously not. They didn't go through years of professional school to not be called Doctor or Esquire. They are your social betters and should be treated as such.

There's a level of anxiety in consulting with either one of these professions, and by being allowed to call them by their first name is o.k. because it can decrease the wall (or pedestal) that can hinder good communication and clear thinking on the patient/client's part, which is in their best interest.

Jesus Christ, you honestly believe this? As one of those people I can assure you this is not the case.

Your modesty is refreshing in this day and age, sir. Allow me to commend you.

QFT. I couldn't agree more. I do believe in showing respect, but that's a different issue.

People still ask this question? Just having come off the "best friend/opposite sex" threak, I must say this forum amazes me sometimes for reminding me how many people never managed to find their way out of the Dark Ages. Geez-oh-pete, these are the kinds of people who read "My Negro Problem- and Ours" and give to friends to show off their progressive thinking. I usually refer to my doctors and lawyers as "HEY."

+1 or amazes at how many people are just plain odd, I sort of wonder how they function in normal life. Also your lawyers being called esquire is funny, that is the norm in the US? Why are they called that?

I thought esquire was just something lawyers put after their name, rather then an actual title people called them by, like having PhD after your name.
