I wanted to get something for my gf and I found out that a lot of the price for jewelry is for their design and brand name, and not necessarily the value of the diamond or the precious metal. Diamonds don't resell very well as well. I wanted something that had sentimental and financial value, so I went to a Vietnamese jeweler and got a 24 kt gold bracelet- it will only increase value and has a luster that's incomparable to any of the lesser-karat gold which is really all that's available in most other stores. No one except for a few Asian jewelers actually sell 24kt jewelry, because it's so soft and delicate, even high-end chain stores. Also, because you know the price of gold, you can immediately judge how much the jeweler is charging for design/brand name... whereas with diamond rings it's almost a complete mystery and the jeweler has the bargaining advantage. Just my personal experience, hope it's helpful.

Well, what ever you do shop around.
Do your best to understand the market and what pricing should be like.

I'm only saying this because your not going to spend alot of money:
Check out Macy's and see what kind of sale they are having. See if they have a 60% off sale--try the Esplanade and New orleans center-if Macy's is still there. I purchased a gorgeous 7 ct diamond and ruby tennis bracelet for a song there. Yes, I know Jewelry experts, they certainly were'nt flawless blue diamonds at that price, but I knew that up front.

Maybe a nice diamond pendant?

I bought my wife's engagement stone at "Leon Saloum" -201 Carondelet -when i worked for American Bank before you were born...

Since then I only purchase from a friend in Palm Springs.

I say try Macy's-if they're having a 60% off sale.

Good luck Mr Peanut--remember a fool and his jewelry is soon parted...Buyer Beware!

Sorry I went off on a Tangent of an extraneous nature...

For $1,000 you should be able to purchase:

.75 ct in a nice color, cut, clarity. OR one .50 diamond with 2 smaller rubies in a nice 14 k white gold setting. But you will have to look around-price shop.

Be sure to ONLY purchase from store that is well known/trusted/recomended and one that will give you 30 days Full cash refund if not happy-this is very important.

@OP: You want to buy your mother a diamond ring? I'm sure that's illegal in some places :-p I would go for a neckless, bracelet or, perhaps, a watch.

Why are you folks suggesting diamonds for this poor chap to buy his mother?

Why not opt for a pearl necklace?

whats the knock on diamonds? i want to get my mom a savage gift. i know she'd love a ring. aren't diamond rings the best/most badass?

Diamonds are a scam. They are worthless stones inflated in price by a multinational cartel that kills children and supports slave labour.

If you were buying a diamond for a girl to get some, I would understand. As this is for your mother you should buy her something with real value that shows the monetary value of your love. I vote a gold bracelet or necklace.

If he takes his mom shopping for jewelry and she wants diamonds, who the hell is he to argue. He's not buying a gift for himself, he should get what she wants (or what he thinks she wants).

i just want to get the coolest/best looking type of jewelry for her. i assumed diamonds were the most baller, and i know she'd appreciate pretty much anything since she isn't too picky. but if diamonds are seen as...unorthadox, i'll go with something more traditional.

buying a diamond ring for your mom is weird. you buy diamond rings for your girlfriend/wife. get your mom diamond earrings, a necklace or bracelet.
