I find this redeeming, but a lot of his other music is rather questionable. He definitely does his own thing though (with the direction his music, so to speak). Hm I don't know if I believe in this post..

Nick Cave is easily one of my favorite musical acts but I do not really consider him a singer / songwriter.

Townes Van Zandt is pretty damn incredible.

^ Godamnit, I was about to congratulate you on your impeccable taste and now I see it's a spam bot copying my own words.

Keep your eyes open for Jim Bryson. He just finished recording a new record with the members of the Weakerthans as his backing band. Should be amazing..out in March or April, I think.

I like that kind of music.

Ray Lamontagne
City and Colour (Dallas Greene)

I don't think anyone's mentioned Ben Vaughn or Iris Dement. I will add some moreTexans: Jimmie Dale Gilmore & Butch Hancock.

As far as new guys, check out Tim Barry and Chuck Ragan. They both used to be in punk bands (Avail and Hot Water Music) and now play acoustic songs and drink lots of beer. I would say Tim Barry's best album is Rivanna Junction and Chuck Ragan's is his new one, Gold Country. Also on the subject of dudes from punk bands taking the singer songwriter route, Frank Turner's second album, Love, Ire and Song is awesome. His new album is good but that second album is great.

i was writing about music then, had known him a bit, was supposed to interview him and, of course, he showed up drunk and slobbering, so i told him no story, that he was talking like a drunken *ss and he invited me out to the parking lot. cooler heads prevailed. did eventually end up doing a piece on him ... he's a great writer, but not a terrific human being (30 years ago). kind of like townes. but i will say that the waylon jennings album of shaver songs to me is the ultimate in modern country ...
