Looking for other good singer-songwriters in the vein of Tom Waits and Johnny Cash. Not so interested in the John Mayer bidnizz, so please spare me. Thanks.

Thanks - I already have Beck's entire library. Nick Cave I should check out...I've been putting it off for too long. Basically I'm looking for people who can tell a good STORY in their songs. As well as those whose music is not overly dense/complicated. Tom Waits can send shivers down your spine with a piano and a voice that sounds like a dying pickup truck.

there's a local cat here in Dallas (well Denton actually) named Brent Best. He used to play with a band called Slobberbone he's now with a group called the Drams as well as a reformed Slobberbone. He writes better drinkin' and killin' songs than anyone I've heard since Cash.

If you dig Neil Young and Paul Westerberg you'll get along well with Brent.

Nick Cave is easily one of my favorite musical acts but I don't really consider him a singer/songwriter.

Townes Van Zandt is pretty damn incredible.
