PPI med side effects, how to stop taking? (i.e., Prilosec, Nexium, omeprazole)

So after doing quite a bit of research I have decided to go off Prilosec and get my stomach health back to normal the natural way. I didnt really put together what was going on until I started doing my own research.

I began on Prilosec about 4 years ago (I am 26) when I was having debilitating heartburn problem. Doc did scope and said I had the beginning of an Esophagul ulcer. Went on the med, had a scope again and everything was cured. Since then I have been on and off Prilosec.

As you can see here, the side effects are vile and the docs really dont warn you.... http://www.askapatient.com/viewratin...&name=prilosec

I never knew of them until a few months ago but now have noticed I had just about all of them. Especially the dissyness and anxiety that began right around the same time I started taking the meds. Anyway, I am now going of it for good.

I have just started to ween off, taking 20mg every other day, going to do that for a month, then keep weening for about another month. At the same time the plan is to take DGL licorice, eat lots of Stony Field 'probiotic' yogurt, and maybe through in some Achidophlius (and change diet).

I just wanted to see if anyone had experience with going off PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) and how they did so, also any reccomendations?

Eating a lot of soluble fiber has really improved my digestive tract. Make sure you have adequate water intake. And eat less buffalo wings before bedtime.

Ive been taking Prilosec ever since it became over the counter, so 5+ years. No issues at all, and I have asked my doctor numerous times, and they have confirmed that it is ok to take on a daily basis indefinitely.

Of course, being off it is preferred, but then I have to give up booze, spicy foods, fried foods, fruit, juice, soda, and eating after 6pm. I'd rather take a pill than live that lifestyle.
