how has this decade been for you? - Page 4

To the casual observer, I probably looked like I was doing really well this time 10 years ago: finishing-up a masters' degree, in good physical health, laid-back & personable, soon-to-be a CEO in a statewide healthcare provider, military service completed, starting a relationship with an attractive & successful lawyer .... In truth, I wasn't happy and wasn't doing well at all.

Ten years later I am living in a different country, earning less money after a big career change, married and madly in love with the finest woman I will ever meet, expecting our first kiddo in 3 months, buying a house in a few weeks, doing a lot of writing for fun ( as well as the writing I do for a living), great friends across the globe and part of a wonderful community locally ... and very happy.

Wow, this makes ME happy. I'm glad you were true to yourself and realized what constituted a good quality of life for you. Personally, I make a LOT less money in San Francisco than I would back home in Texas; also I can not get a house the size of a house elsewhere because of the money I'd have to lay down - both of these "negatives" are beyond many people's comprehension. But I am where I am happiest.

Still, I could do with a break.

Only good years for me were 00 and parts of 01, and parts of 08 and parts of 09.

I think it's all about perspective and I need to tweak mine.

And it's not as bad being 50 as I thought it would be.

My kids are beautiful and THAT's what it's all about.

Just at the end of the decade, over the last two years, I really started asking myself what I want to do with my life, what my purpose is.

Broadly, the last decade pushed me through the trials, tribulations, and world experiences to take me from being a boy to being a self-guided man on an internalized level. I believe the next will allow me to build on that foundation and shape my life more clearly and in line with my beliefs, on an external level.

The end of the decade was actually a disconcertingly apt divider leading into the next "book" of my life.

Pretty much the same here. Given my age I think of things in terms of years rather than decades. I finished university at the end of '06. Was cheated on by my girlfriend of five years NYE '06. 2007 was therefore an absolutely terrible year. 2008 was a slight improvement. I was laid off at the beginning of 2009 but the year ended well with a new career and a promotion in eight months, and the beginning of a relationship with the first "real" woman I've ever had (as opposed to "girls"). 2010 is looking damn good so far.

Let's check back in 2020 and see how we're doing.

I love this decade very much.

First 3/4 of the decade were great...career going well, finances booming, lots of travel, good times with friends and family. The last couple of years have sucked royally - my wife developed cancer, my mom has alzheimer's, the market crash cost us at least 1/3rd of our net worth, and for the cherry on the sundae I got laid off last month.

Awesome decade all around. Changed location, changed career, got a job I like, survived circa 326 rounds of layoffs, fell in love, got married, got two amazing kids. The years 2000 will be hard to beat for me.

2000s were really good overall. Had a lot of drama in the first half of 2000, but it was good times. Met my now missus on 2000, got married in 2007. Done a good amount of travelling. Have more $ in the bank than ever. Got our 2 weinerdogs in last few years. Have nearly zero debt other than usual stuff like car, house, etc I'm not as optimistic about the next 10 years, both mine and her parents are getting old which is always a concern.
