Classic Films Thread

Thread Starter
So one thing I see here on SF is a severe lack of discussion of classic cinema. I would like to start a thread devoted to movie gems made before 1950.

Earlier today(gotta love vacation), I watched The General, starring Buster Keaton

While the narrative was fantastic, was surprised me most about this film was the incredible level of athleticism demonstrated by Keaton. The scene where he balances a real rail-road tie while riding on the front of the steam locomotive was incredible.

Also, The scene where the locomotive runs off the burning bridge into the river was mind-blowing! The fact that this was done without any special effects is impressive in the sense that this is a real locomotive falling over 100 feet.

A superb movie really, I hope other SFers share my love for these gems released before 1950.

The problem is that when someone starts a "Best Comedy Ever" thread some dumb kid says, The Wedding Crashers and the whole thing comes to a thudding halt.

Yes to Keaton.

"And the cameraman was ordered to keep shooting until Buster yelled cut. Or was killed."

I am a Harold Lloyd fan.

Due to an ill-scheduled bout of sickness, tonight I will be watching the greatest film ever made. Citizen Kane.

I have been watching a lot of films on TCM recently.

The Frank Capra films really hold up well, obviously Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's A Wonderful Life but also Meet John Doe and Lost Horizon.

Also recently enjoyed On the Waterfront with Brando and They Drive by Night with Humphrey Bogart and George Raft.

One of my favorites, the Asphalt Jungle was on the other night.

The films and the styles are great. One actor I've really started watching is Gary Cooper because his height and build were similar to mine and I enjoy seeing how he's dressed for his roles.

+1 to The General. Sherlock Jr. is most excellent as well. Watching Hail the Conquering Hero now. Preston Sturges' films are highly underrated for the most part.

Chaplin, The Great Dictator is one of the all time great movies, especially in context.

Newer than 1950, but great is the original "Producers".

"Sunset Blvd" is right at the cusp of 1950 and before, but I've watched it many, many times. It gets better.

"Double Indemnity" is always worth a look see.

12 Angry men, while not a pre-1950 movie is good. Also, M is one of my favorites. Rashomon Rope ... I'll think of more.

Check out Arsenic and Old Lace. It's quite brilliant.

How is this? The few people I know who have seen it seem to think that the "single shot" gimmick detracts from the film as a whole. Haven't seen it myself yet though. This thread really should be moved.
